A newborn baby was found on a doorstep at an area apartment complex.
The three-pound newborn baby girl was found in front of a doorstep at the Woodshire Apartments in Williamsburg. Police are now desperate to find the baby's mother. Williamsburg Police Department Deputy Chief David Sloggie says, "The baby was found in a towel, naked. Her umbilical cord was tied with a string."
Police believe the baby is less than 24 hours old and that she was four to five weeks premature. She is so tiny, police aren't even sure of her race.
According to officers, the child was abandoned around noon. She was discovered between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m.
The residents who found the newborn took her inside, cleaned her up, and attempted to take care of her. But, according to police, because they don't speak English, they didn't call 9-1-1 until 6 o'clock.
The baby's body temperature was dangerously low when rescue crews arrived. But Wednesday, the little girl is listed in good condition.
While the child recovers, authorities are now focused on finding the mother. They're investigating whether or not she lived in the apartment complex where the baby was found. Williamsburg's Human Services tells 8News it's working to get custody of the child once she's released from the hospital.
8News spoke to one of the men who got help for the newborn. He says they had some difficulty because there was no one nearby who could translate from Spanish to English to communicate with police. Witness Jose Flores says, "So, we laid her in the crib and everything, and from there, we had her wrapped up because the baby was very tender and we thought she might be cold."
|f you have any information about the baby, you're asked to call Williamsburg Police at 757-220-2331.
