Amber Leeanne DuBois, 14 Mising 2/13/09 CA
Teen vanishes on way to school By Emanuella Grinberg CNN (CNN) -- Last Friday the 13th was supposed to be a special day for 14-year-old Amber Leeanne DuBois. She left her home in Escondido, California, around 7 a.m. for school with a check in hand, a down payment on a baby lamb that she was going to raise and care for as part of her Future Farmers of America class. It was a day that she'd been looking forward to for more than a year, her family says. But she never made it to school and hasn't been heard from since, prompting authorities to launch a massive search for the missing teen. "She would not have given up that lamb for anything," her mother, Carrie McGonigle, said. "She's a wholesome kid. She doesn't run amok like most teenagers. She did not run away, I guarantee it." Her cell phone was turned on once for about 20 seconds the day after she disappeared and has not been turned on since then, Escondido Police spokesman Lt. Bob Benton said. Her mother and her live-in boyfriend voluntarily submitted to polygraph tests and passed, Benton said. Amber's father, who lives in Orange County, California, and other relatives have been interviewed, he added. A classmate reported seeing Amber a week ago on Sunday, walking with an unidentified person about half a mile from her home, Benton said. "We don't know the circumstances of her disappearance or the person she was walking with, but being 14 years old and missing as long as she has without ever having gone missing before is very suspicious," Benton said. The FBI is assisting the Escondido Police in the investigation, said Special Agent Darrell Foxworth from the agency's San Diego office. "The assistance that we are providing includes conducting interviews and following up on leads as they develop," Foxworth said. Amber's parents insist she would never stay away from home for so long without notifying them, leading them to believe she was abducted. "As a person who knows my daughter very, very well, I'm 95 percent positive she's not just wandering around the area," said her father, Maurice DuBois. "If she was abducted by stranger -- hopefully not -- she could be anywhere in the U.S, Mexico by now. Eight days is a long time to be missing." Amber's parents say she was a not-so-typical teen who shunned social networking sites like MySpace.com and Facebook and preferred reading, drawing and spending time with friends at home over hanging out at the mall. "When she'd get in trouble, I'd have to take her books away," McGonigle said, chuckling as she recalled her daughter's habit of hiding under her bed sheets with a flashlight so she could read late at night. Her first passion was animals, a lifelong devotion that began with her first horse, Rojo, and led to her joining the FFA when she entered high school. Two weeks before she disappeared, she wrote her mother a letter urging her to let her buy the lamb she planned to name Nannette, outlining how she would care for it and suggesting it would look good on her resume, McGonigle said. "I know in my heart that there's nothing that would take her away from that lamb. She would never miss that day. That's how I know she didn't just run away," McGonigle said. "I go to sleep thinking she's going to be walking in my room any minute saying, 'Mom, I'm back.' But now it's just becoming a numb feeling." Members of the community of Escondido, a bedroom community of San Diego, have been generous with donations of money, resources and manpower in the efforts to locate Amber, her mother said. A candlelight vigil at Escondido High School on Friday night drew about 200 people, Amber's friend Hailey Kosinski said, in a show of support that brought a measure of comfort to her family and friends. Hailey, who has known Amber since the sixth grade, said she could always count on her to brighten her day when she was feeling down. "She smiles and tells you everything's going to be OK and you just feel better," she said. "She's sort of shy when you first meet her, but once you get to know her, she's the kindest person you'll ever meet." The 14-year-old described her friend's disappearance as a rude awakening to the dangers of ordinary life. "It makes you think of the many, many situations that could occur when you're walking on the street, or when you walk away from friends for just a little while," said Hailey, who has spent most of her free time in the past week posting fliers on traffic poles and in stores. "It's the most horrible, gut-wrenching feeling to know your friend is out there and there's nothing you can do to help her. You feel so powerless." http://www.cnn.com/2009/CRIME/02/22/amber.dubois/index.html

Hundreds Search Rugged Terrain for Missing California Girl Sunday, February 22, 2009 The family of a missing 14-year old California girl launched an all-out search Sunday morning that extended into the local mountains. Hundreds of volunteers combed through rugged terrain in search for Amber LeeAnne DuBois, television news station San Diego 6 reported. DuBois was reportedly last seen shortly after 7 a.m. on Feb. 13 while walking to her high school in Escondido, Calif. The FBI is “providing investigative assistance” to Escondido police, an agency spokesman told the San Diego Union Tribune on Saturday. Investigators said Amber — who was last seen wearing black clothing and a backpack — talked to a friend on her cell phone as she walked to class that morning. She has not been seen or heard from since, police said. The teen's father, Maurice DuBois, said reports of a possible sighting of his daughter Saturday were considered unreliable. He said Amber is very structured, and not the type of girl to run away. The family is hoping that the Tour of California bicycle race — which is expected to draw thousands of spectators to Escondido on Sunday — will heighten public awareness and help in finding Amber. Local media outlets reported Friday that there may have been an attempted abduction in the same area where Amber was last seen. The family's private investigator Bill Garcia told San Diego 6 that a woman was almost abducted by a man driving a white utility vehicle in Escondido two weeks before Amber was reported missing — though police have not yet determined a credible link between that case and Amber's disappearance. Meanwhile, family members have set up a Web site http://www.bigcatdesigns.com/amber/amber.htm with pictures and contact information for the missing girl, and are pushing for the search to go nationwide. http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,498150,00.html

Missing Escondido Girl the Target of a Cruel Prank? Last Update: 6:31 am Reported By: Courtney Dwyer There is another possible theory behind the disappearance of Amber Dubois. The 14-year-old girl has been missing since Friday February 13th. Amber's family and Private Investigator Bill Garcia are piecing together what they think may have happened. Their primary theory remains that Amber was abducted by a stranger while on her way to school, but now another possibility is developing. “Either someone that knew Amber or knew of Amber may have played a cruel prank on her being that is was Friday the 13th and the Valentine's day holiday,” says Garcia. According to Garcia, based on talks with Amber's friends, Escondido High School has seen its fair share of cruel and unusual pranks. Specific details on what kind of pranks were not released. “I don't feel in my heart, even though I've heard stories of it, but I don't feel in my heart that any child would hold a prank on this long,” says Amber’s father, Maurice Dubois. Dubois says from day one he's felt that Amber was abducted. Residents in San Diego County are reminded of Amber nearly everyday, but now her search is gaining National and even International attention; but Escondido will remain the primary area of search. “It was disgusting, within two miles of her school there are 29 registered sex offenders,” says Dubois. The family has launched a new 24 hour hotline. If you know anything, you can now call 1-888-55-AMBER and you can remain anonymous. You are also urged to call Escondido Police at (760) 839-4722. Missing Girl Investigators Interview Hundreds of Students; Family Takes Lie Detector Test. Reported by: Elex Michaelson Email: elex.michaelson@sandiego6.com Last Update: 2:32 pm ESCONDIDO - Amber Dubois has been missing for two weeks now, not seen since she walked to school in Escondido on Friday, February 13th. Amber's family thinks all evidence points toward Amber planning to arrive at school on Friday, February 13th. They say she was carrying Valentine's Day gifts for her friends and a $200 check for a deposit on a lamb she planned to raise as part of her school's Future Farmer's program. The family also reveals Amber sent four text messages to her grandmother before leaving the house that morning for the roughly mile-long walk to school. Amber was last seen by two family friends only about 300 yards from the school's gate. Police interviewed hundreds of students at Amber's high school, according to published reports that also say the girl's family members have been given polygraph tests. The FBI is assisting police in the investigation. Amber's family also hired a private detective. Last weekend, Amber's mother led hundreds on a search for Amber through local mountains, but this weekend she has a different approach. "I don't think she's out in the hills as much, I think she's alive and she's at somebody's house" said Carrie McGonigle, Amber's mother. Carrie welcomes the community to help her pass out more than 40,000 fliers she printed regarding Amber's disappearance. The strategy is to go door to door to as many of Escondido's 80,000 homes as possible. The Escondido Fire Department has provided the family an extensive map of the area--and they will assign particular blocks to people, so there are not repeats. McGonigle instructs interested people to meet at Vista Ave. and Broadway in Escondido to pick up fliers and receive assignments. She hopes passing them out will help drum up attention on Amber once again--who hasn't been seen since walking to Escondido High School. For the second Friday in a row, the family held a candlelight vigil open to the public. About a quarter as many people showed up as last week. Amber's father, Maurice Dubois, had a much harder time getting through this week. "I would have never imagined this going on for two weeks, trying to keep the hope up as best we can, but today's just really long, long day" he said. Some students at the vigil said they now feel less safe. Among them--Escondido High School senior Saieed Rihan. He said, "school is supposed to be a place where you feel safe at, so if a kid goes missing around the school area, a lot of kids will get scared fearing for their own safety." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ESCONDIDO - There is another possible theory behind the disappearance of Amber Dubois. Bikers Raise Thousands To Find Amber Search continues for missing teen By SUSAN TAYLOR, H. HUGHES and VANESSA GUZMAN Updated 7:46 AM PDT, Mon, Mar 30, 2009 Father of missing Escondido teenager Amber Dubois said about $6,800 was raised this past weekend after a bike run, raffle and barbecue. Amber's father Maurice Dubois said about $5,500 will go into the Amber Leeanne Dubois Trust Fund to support future searches of the 14-year-old teen. The rest will pay for event expenses. The next event in the works is Concert in the Park, a fundraiser at Kit Carson Park in Escondido from noon to 7 p.m., Dubois said. Seven bands are scheduled thus far and said more details will be released later this week. Another search was conduceted on Sunday for the Esconido High freshman as 60 volunteers searched for Amber throughout Escondido, but to no avail. Her parents, though frustrated, say they're not giving up hope, even though the number of volunteers has dwindled and police have no new leads. "The more attention the better," Maurice Dubois said. "There's got to be someone out there who knows something." Last week, Applebee's restaurants in San Diego, Riverside and Orange counties donated 15 percent of their revenue to help in the search. Saturday there was a "poker run" motorcycle ride from San Juan Capistrano to Escondido that ended at the search center that's been set up for Amber. Event organizers said about 150 riders showed up at the center. After the run there was a giant raffle, live entertainment and food provided by Buckboard BBQ. Maurice Dubois told our media partner The North County Times that the riders with the best poker hands won thousands, but declined the prize money, instead donating it back to the search fund. "It shows you the kind of heart these people have," he said. Maurice Dubois said they raised over $5,000 Saturday. He also told NBC 7/39 that they are narrowing their search to weekends only. Amber was last seen walking to school on February 13, 2009. Considered a model student, her parents believe she was abducted by strangers. Vigil aims to raise awareness of abductions Family from north San Diego County comes to Glendale in search of their teenage daughter. By Veronica Rocha Published: Last Updated Sunday, May 17, 2009 9:51 PM PDT Fourteen-year-old Amber Dubois walked from home to school on Feb. 13, carrying a check to buy a lamb, which she would have taken care of at school. Amber, a member of the Future Farmers of America, was excited about buying the lamb, which her father, Moe Dubois, said she had saved money for. But Amber, an Escondido resident, never made it to school that morning or home that night. The vibrant and energetic ninth-grader, who has an affinity for animals and books, hasn’t been seen or heard from since Feb. 13. Amber’s parents feared that she was abducted because she would have never gone with a stranger and has no history of running away. Escondido police told Amber’s mother, Carrie McGonigle, that it was a one-in-a-million-chance that she was abducted. “I told them this is the one-in-a-million chance,” she said. Feeling a sense of urgency to find Amber, her parents wanted to get the word out about their missing daughter well beyond Escondido, so they spoke out Sunday at the Los Angeles and Orange Counties Vigil For Hope ceremony at Glendale City Hall in the Parcher Plaza. Sunday’s ceremony was dedicated to bringing community agencies and residents together in an effort to raise awareness of human trafficking and abduction. Similar vigils were held throughout the country Sunday to bring attention to missing adults and children. The Glendale Commission on the Status of Women, Soroptimist International Glendale Chapter and Glendale Police Department Missing Persons Unit, along with other community groups, helped put on the event. Glendale hasn’t recently had any serious missing-person cases such as abductions, Glendale Det. Tim Oswandel said. “In Glendale, I can assure you we take these matters very serious,” he said. Fliers and photos of missing persons from Los Angeles and Orange counties were scattered throughout the Parcher Plaza. The event chairwoman, Kathie Mathis, asked those in attendance to closely look at and remember the photos. The Department of Justice has determined that 2,185 children are reported missing every day, she said. Nearly 203,900 children are abducted by family members every year and 115 children are victims of stranger kidnappings. “We need to bring them home,” she said. Women’s commission Chairwoman Paula Devine reminded those in attendance not to give up hope. “When we lose hope, we’ve lost,” she said. Robert Linden of the jazz and blues band, Zen Boogie, wrote a song titled “Help bring them home,” specifically for Sunday’s vigil. Linden was inspired to write the song after a child, who was a member of a choir that he taught, went missing, Linden said. He and his band performed the song dedicated to missing children such as Amber. Vigil is set for missing girl, 14 Search continues for Amber Dubois By J. Harry Jones 2:00 a.m. June 12, 2009 DETAILS Candlelight vigil for Amber Dubois When: 1 to 4 p.m. tomorrow Where: 755 N. Quince St., Escondido What: Candlelight vigil, culminating with release of balloons at 4 p.m. ESCONDIDO — It will be four months tomorrow since 14-year-old Amber Dubois went missing while walking to school in Escondido, and a search center established shortly after she disappeared is closing down. Every weekend volunteers have been scouring nearby hills for any sign of the teen, without success. The number of volunteers has dwindled to a point that only about 20 people have been showing up to help. Amber's mother, Carrie McGonigle, said that the center will close this weekend and that future search efforts will concentrate on distributing fliers in Riverside and Orange counties. “Most people know about Amber in San Diego,” she said. “But nobody knows about her further north.” The search center, at 755 N. Quince St. in Escondido, will be the site of a candlelight vigil from 1 to 4 p.m. tomorrow, culminating in the release of balloons at 4 p.m. McGonigle said she still harbors hope. “I still feel she's alive and I still feel she's nearby,” she said. “We just have to find where.” Police say they have followed up on about 900 tips, including false sightings of the teen, without anything concrete being found. An examination of Amber's Internet activity so far has shown only that she visited sites that any normal 14-year-old girl would, Escondido Police Lt. Bob Benton said. Some records still have not been obtained because the Web site operators are based outside the United States. The FBI has been helping with the Internet side of the investigation. Amber's cell phone has not been used since the day after she disappeared, when someone in northern Escondido tried to access her voice mail for about 20 seconds but gave up after realizing the password had been changed. Her parents had it changed when she didn't come home so they could listen to any messages that might have been left for her. It now appears that a burgundy pickup truck seen on surveillance videotape of a school bus maintenance yard near Escondido High School about the same time that Amber disappeared is not the same pickup spotted in another case. San Diego police are searching for a similar pickup in connection with the molestation of two young girls at two Wal-Mart stores in April and May. But Benton said the trucks appear to be different. Police still classify Amber as a missing juvenile, saying there isn't enough information to say definitively whether she was abducted or ran away. Nationally known missing children's advocate Marc Klaas will attend the vigil, McGonigle said. Anyone with information about Amber's whereabouts is asked to call (760) 743-TIPS (8477). Amber's family has offered a $50,000 reward for information leading to her return, and a $10,000 reward for information leading to arrests. J.
