Amber Lynn Wilde,Missing, Sept. 1998 WI.
Amber Lynn Wilde Vital Statistics at Time of Disappearance Missing Since: September 23, 1998 from Green Bay, Wisconsin Classification: Endangered Missing Date of Birth: March 26, 1979 Age: 19 years old Height and Weight: 5'4 - 5'6, 135 - 140 pounds Distinguishing Characteristics: Brown hair, brown eyes. Wilde has eight piercings in each ear. Clothing Description: Eight small gold hoop earrings in each ear. Medical Conditions: Wilde was pregnant at the time of her disappearance; estimates as to how far the pregnancy had progressed range from two to six months. She also sustained a slight head injury in a car accident on the day of her disappearance. Details of Disappearance Wilde was a junior and a pre-medicine major at the University of Wisconsin at Green Bay at the time of her disappearance, having transfered there from the West Bend campus. She last spoke to her family September 23, 1998, after she got into a minor car accident. She was not seriously injured in the accident. The other person involved in the accident called Wilde's apartment in the 2000 block of August Street that evening to work out damages. The next day Wilde's father, who lives in Mayville, Wisconsin, called his daughter to wake her up for her classes but received no answer. He drove to Green Bay and reported her missing. More than a week after Wilde's disappearance, her car, a gray four-door 1988 Subaru GL, was discovered unlocked and abandoned in the parking lot of a sports bar in Green Bay, near Lambeau Field on the south side of Lombardi Access Road, near Ridge Road. There was no sign of Wilde at the scene, but her purse and cellular phone were locked inside the trunk of the Subaru, which is the place where she usually kept them, and the car keys were in the ignition. Some evidence pertaining to her disappearance was also found in the vehicle, but police have not said what it was. Some authorities do not believe the car had been at that location for the whole week Wilde had been missing. Wilde is a native of Campbellsport, Wisconsin and a graduate of Campbellsport High School, and her mother still lives in that area. Wilde's family says it is uncharacteristic of her to leave without warning. Her aunt had offered to take care of her child once it was born, so Wilde could finish school. She wanted to become a doctor. Police suspect foul play in Wilde's disappearance and have done several unsuccessful searches for her body. Her family has suspicions directed at the father of her unborn child, who has not been ruled out as a suspect. No one, however, has been charged with any wrongdoing in Wilde's case. There is some speculation that her case may be connected somehow to the 2003 disappearance of Areerat Chuprevich from Allouez, Wisconsin, but there is no evidence to support this theory. Both cases remain open and unsolved. Weather Puts Amber Wilde Search on Hold Updated: Dec 6, 2007 06:52 PM EST By Jenn Karlman The search for Amber Wilde is temporarily on hold. Investigators have been searching a field off Highway 29 in Shawano County all week for the woman who disappeared in 1998 when she was 19 years old. The command center is gone and Green Bay police officers will not be back on Friday, but the investigation and the search are not over. Green Bay police say the weather factored into the decision to interrupt their search. When police started digging, it was 13 degrees below zero. The digging stopped despite a cadaver dog indicating it hit on a human scent. The cold was affecting the trained dogs' ability to trace the scents. "The air becomes heavier as it gets cold, and you start to get a tumbling effect, a swirling effect, inside the hole. What happens is, the dogs get a little confused as far as where the odor is coming from, and a little anxiety because they want to solve it, they want to find it, they want to find what the source is," Captain Karl Fleury said. Now they need to essentially let the air and odor settle. "We felt the best course of action was to be prudent, which was to secure the scene, let the air settle, and give the dogs the best opportunity to work," Fleury said. The hole is now the size of a large swimming pool about 15 feet deep. Police put up fencing and police tape around the hole, and plan to wait at least 24 hours before digging again. "We have not found anything at this time but we are maintaining as a scene because there is potential," Fleury said. Meantime, they hold hope that something in the piles of dirt removed so far holds a clue that will bring closure to this nine-year-old case. The Shawano County Sheriff's Department is keeping watch. The dig is on private property, and police warn that anyone on the land will be fined and arrested. http://www.wbay.com/Global/story.asp?S=7462073
