People in the Boothbay area are remembering a tragic anniversary. Two years ago, a man named Jon Dilley shot and killed his wife and his mother, in front of his children.
The killing of Chellie Calloway and Sally Murray shocked the area. Both women were well known and well liked. Since then, a lot of people have been trying to do something about the problem of domestic violence.
Several large employers, along with the towns of Boothbay, Boothbay Harbor and Southport, have adoped domestic abuse policies for all their employees. Those policies are basically designed to make it easier for workers to report abuse and seek help from their employers.
"Hopefully its gonna bring more awareness to domestic violence and bring it to the forefront more. It's been around I hate to say forever, but it has been. And hopefully this will try to bring an end to it," said Boothbay selectman Chuck Cunningham.
"You can't guarantee it won't happen, but what you can do is educate the people who are affected. And in this case all the community was affected," said Holly Stover from the Domestic Abuse Council.
Stover says they plan to keep sponsoring workshops and programs in the schools, and work on other efforts to reduce domestic violence.
"We've done a lot of work ", she says, "but we're not finished."
Jon Dilley was convicted of manslaughter, and is scheduled to be sentenced to prison in late September.
