Not even wintry temperatures — dipping into the 30s—Friday night could stop Monica Caison’s mission to raise awareness for missing people.
“We are here to raise awareness, to get the word out, to remind people that Crystal is still missing,” Caison said. “We will continue on until we get some answers.”
Caison, founder of the CUE Center for Missing Persons, organized the candlelight vigil at Blount’s Furniture in Andrews to honor Crystal Soles, a West Andrews woman missing since Jan. 24, 2005.
Some 50 people attended the vigil, where Caison also unveiled a large billboard featuring Crystal’s information.
Gail Soles, Crystal’s mother, spoke briefly, saying that she and her family “will never give up” until they find their daughter.
Mallory Malter, a senior from Wilmington, N.C., performed “My Immortal” to honor Crystal.
Also in attendance were family members of Brandy Hanna, a 32-year-old North Charleston woman missing since May 20, 2005, and Delwin Locklear, a 28-year-old Maxton, N.C. man missing since July 7, 2004. Both cases remain unsolved and are considered “cold” for lack of clues, evidence or suspects.
Buddy Locklear, Delwin’s father, said he hopes Friday’s vigil will make the public more aware of these cases.
“People hear about missing people and don’t pay attention because it’s not their family,” Locklear said. “You never know until it hits your doorstep.”
Donna Parent, Brandy’s mother, said not knowing anything is the worst part about her daughter’s disappearance.
“Nobody knows anything. I’m begging anybody, ‘Tell me where my daughter is,’” Donna said. “I need to know either way.”
For Buddy, though, events like Friday night’s vigil offer a little comfort.
“I’m hoping tonight will make a difference,” he said. “If we can find one person we could make a difference.”
Caison appeared on CNN’s Larry King Live Nov. 25, 2005, to discuss cases considered “cold.” She also showed photographs of the missing people.
Crystal’s information is listed on The Charley Project and Project Jason.
Her information also was featured during a Web-broadcast California concert by Jannel Rap, founder of GINA for Missing Persons, in early January.
Call the Andrews Police Department at 264-5223 or CUE’s confidential 24-hour tip-line at (910) 232-1687 with any information about the cases of Brandy, Crystal or Delwin.
