Chairo Garibay Ferrayra Located/Deceased/Murdered
Searchers Look for Missing Woman Along Bear River Written for the web by C. Johnson, Internet News Producer Searchers are looking for Chairo Garibay Ferreyra. Her family's green 1995 Toyota Camry was discovered Sunday morning partially submerged in the river. Investigators learned Garibay Ferreyra was to have met her parents for church early Sunday morning but never arrived. When the parents returned home, they found their daughter and the Toyota gone but her purse and identification in the house. The young woman's family doesn't believe she would leave home on her own. "She's a very happy person and that's why it's strange to us," said family friend Erica Guzman. The Toyota was found about 9:30 Sunday morning about a quarter of a mile east of State Route 70 in Yuba County. Detectives said there was no reason why Garibay Ferreyra would have driven out on the levee above where the car was found. "Very suspicious circumstances certainly," Undersheriff Steve Durfor told News10. "We're not ruling out the possibility of foul play." Searchers will resume looking for Garibay Tuesday morning with help from neighboring counties. http://www.news10.net/storyfull2.aspx?storyid=14757

Searchers Concentrate on Fields Near Missing Woman's Home Searchers in Yuba County spent the day looking through open fields and a construction site near the home of Chairo Garibay Ferreyra, who has been missing since Sunday. Investigators also went through Garibay Ferreyra's car, a white Mercury Cougar that was left behind at her house. So far it has yielded no new leads. Garibay Ferreyra was reported missing by her parents when she failed to meet them at church early Sunday morning. They found her purse and identification still in their house and her bedroom window was open. Their Toyota was gone and found later partially submerged in the Bear River. Searchers today also continued to look around the Bear River for clues as to what happened to her. Many of those walking the fields and river area are Garibay Ferreyra's family and friends. Her disappearance is very painful for all of them, said her friend Jessica Bautista. "When you see her family looking for her, they're just really depressed. When you see them crying, looking around everywhere for her, it's kind of sad." On Tuesday night Garibay Ferreyra's friends and family gathered at her home in a show of support. The family does not believe Garibay Ferreyra left on her own, but they also don't believe a stranger took her. Few people know Garibay Ferreyra as well as her boyfriend, but he said he doesn't know what happened to her. "I don't know what to say," Mana Mahmood said. "I don't know, I mean there's nothing I can say until they find her." Investigators said Mahmood is just one of several dozen people they've interviewed and that he has been cooperative. They also said they are not even sure a crime has been committed. Searchers told News10 say they will keep looking for Garibay Ferreyra through the weekend. Then depending on what they find or don't find, they will re-evaluate. Created: 12/14/2005 1:18:34 PM Updated: 12/14/2005 5:39:06 PM News 10

Garibay search suspended By Daniel Witter/Appeal-Democrat The Yuba County Sheriff's Department has suspended its search for an Olivehurst woman who disappeared earlier this month, Undersheriff Steve Durfor said Tuesday. The department will renew its search for Chairo Yosigey Garibay, 20, when there are any new, viable leads on her whereabouts, he said. An exhaustive search for Garibay was conducted in areas around her home in Olivehurst. Searchers also looked in the area where her vehicle was discovered submerged in the Bear River a half-mile east of Highway 70. They've also looked along the Feather River and the fields in the nearby area, Durfor said. Meanwhile, the criminal investigation into Garibay's disappearance continues with the assistance of investigators from the Department of Justice, Durfor said. Garibay is 5 feet 1 inch tall. She weighs 135 pounds, has brown hair and brown eyes. She was likely wearing a new pair of blue jeans, and a long-sleeved black shirt that zips up in the front and brown leather cowboy boots with pointed tips and wooden heels. Garibay was last seen 5 a.m. Dec. 11 by her family members as she prepared to attend an early morning church service. She was supposed to meet her family at church but never showed up. At 9:30 a.m., a nature photographer discovered the family's 1995 Toyota Camry submerged in the Bear River. The Sheriff's Department contacted the family a short time later after the California Highway Patrol traced the plates to the Olivehurst family. The Sheriff's Department simultaneously launched a criminal investigation and a rescue effort. Large areas of south Yuba County have been checked multiple times during a ten-day search, Durfor said. The family has also carried out searches as well. Sheriff's Department officials are urging anyone with information on Garibay's possible whereabouts to call a 24-hour hotline at 749-7399. http://www.appeal-democrat.com/articles/2005/12/28/news/local_news/news2.txt

More than 500 people attended the funeral mass at St. Joesph's Church for Garibay Ferreyra, whose body was found Monday afternoon after more than a month of searching. Many mourners came in pink clothing and carried pink flowers, Garibay Ferreyra's favorite color. "She's in a good place so the last thing she wants us to be is crying," Garibay Ferreyra's cousin Uriel Chavez said. "She would want us to be happy because that's the way she wanted us to be." A pair of local residents found the Garibay Ferreyra's body, wrapped in plastic and weighed down by concrete, Monday afternoon after their truck got stuck in the mud near the Western Pacific Railroad tracks north of Plumas-Arboga Road, about a half-mile from Garibay Ferreyra's home. Yuba County authorities had been searching for the 20-year-old since December 11 after her parents reported her missing when she failed to meet them at church. Her purse and identification were found in the family home. Her bedroom window was open and the family's green 1995 Toyota Camry was gone. Friends of Murdered Woman Question Lack of Progress in Case Written for the web by Deborah Hoffman, Reporter Chairo Garibay of Olivehurst disappeared from her family's home a year ago today and her close friends say not enough is being done to find her killer. Tereso Villalobos, a close family friend, said he is frustrated that no one has been charged with killing Garibay. He said it does not seem to be a priority for the Yuba County Sheriff's Department. "I feel like they don't care about it," said Villalobos. "It's been a year, and there is no progress." Villalobos said he and many of Garibay's friends and cousins question whether race and social status play a role. "I think because she is a poor Hispanic girl they don't care. If she was white from a good neighborhood I think it would be a different story," he said. Yuba County Sheriff Virginia Black defended her department's work on the case. "This is an open homicide investigation. We have followed up on every lead." Black said as a woman and a mother she is very sensitive to the family's loss. "We would like nothing better than to make an arrest and bring justice to Chairo." Black said she believes there is someone out there who knows what happened. She's hoping they will come forward with information. A special service will be held Monday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Marysville to mark the one year anniversary of Garibay's death. Garibay, 20, was last seen alive on the morning of December 11, 2005. When her family left for church, she was still getting ready and was supposed to meet them at church. She never showed up. A few hours later a man walking along the Bear River spotted a car partially submerged. The car belonged to the Garibay family, but there was no sign of Chairo. The find sparked an intensive search effort. On January 16, 2006, Garibay's body was found wrapped in plastic in a ditch a quarter of a mile away from her home. She had suffered blunt force trauma to the head. There is a $5,000 reward in the case for information leading to an arrest and conviction.
