GRAND RAPIDS -- As October is being recognized as Domestic Violence Awareness Month, church bells tolled Friday across Grand Rapids in memory of the thousands of Michigan women and children fleeing unsafe homes.
Flowers were laid on the steps of the LaGrave Avenue Christian Reformed Church in memory of those who died across the state this year as a result of domestic violence.
This year's theme is "Do You Know Four Women? One of Them is a Victim."
"To be aware of the epidemic that happens in our community when they hear the bells tolling in churches around grand rapids today," says Jennifer Marcum, the executive director of Safe Haven Ministries.
Marcum's agency partnered with several area churches and businesses for the bell ringing ceremony.
