Congressman CannonDear
Thank you for contacting me regarding tougher penalties for sex offenders. This is a very important issue, and I am happy to address your concerns.
Protecting our children from sexual predators is a priority for the United States Congress. In 1994, Congress passed the Jacob Wetterling Crimes Against Children and Sexually Violent Offender Registration Act, which established the current public registration standards for convicted sex offenders. Recent incidents such as the Jessica Lunsford case in Florida, however, show these laws need to be updated.
I am working hard in the fight for tougher penalties against convicted sex offenders. I am a cosponsor of HR 1505, the Jessica Lunsford Act, HR 3132, the Children's Safety Act of 2005, and HR 2423, the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act. These bills would place stricter tracking regulations on former offenders and harsher penalties should they fail to comply. I am also a cosponsor of HR 1142, Child Modeling Exploitation Prevention Act, which deals with child exploitation and child pornography, working to reduce the problem of sexual assault against children. These bills will work to better protect our children and justly punish those that break such laws. As a member of the House Judiciary Committee, I will be actively involved in moving these bills to the House floor for a final vote.
Again I thank you for contacting me with your concerns. Please feel free to do so again if I can be of assistance.
Warmest regards,
Chris Cannon
Member of Congress
