Missouri man a 'person of interest' in area murder By Tom Collins courtreporter@newstrib.com A Missouri pizza manager accused of kidnapping two boys is considered a person of interest in the 2003 murder of Dalton Mesarchik, a Livingston County radio station reported. WJEZ reported alleged kidnapper Michael Devlin may have had a role in the disappearance and bludgeoning death of the 7-year-old from Streator. Devlin, 41, of Kirkwood, Mo. is charged in the abduction of 15-year-old Shawn Hornbeck and 13-year-old Ben Ownby, both of whom were found alive in Devlin’s apartment. Michelle Mesarchik, Dalton’s mother, said police investigators close to the case have not advised her of a possible link to Devlin, but she said she’s been following the Devlin case on the news with considerable interest. “He’s a suspect in several abductions,” Mesarchick said. “They’d have to look at him. I’d be mad if they didn’t.” Neither La Salle County State’s Attorney Brian Towne nor Master Sgt. Tad Williams, the state police agent assigned to the Mesarchik case, could be reached for comment before press time this morning. Significantly, receptionists at both offices said the men were out of state. http://www.newstrib.com/display.asp?Article=C68203EE0D67050E944BB4D632B7AAB671AD10B04631F6C2

Wednesday, January 31, 2007 Investigators search former apartment of Mo. kidnap suspect, look for ties to Ill. slaying Published: Wednesday, January 31, 2007 3:48 PM CST ST. LOUIS (AP) - The investigation of child kidnapping suspect Michael Devlin has expanded, with authorities searching one of his previous apartments and investigators in Illinois looking into a possible connection to the 2003 murder of a 7-year-old boy. Devlin, a 41-year-old pizzeria manager, faces kidnapping charges in two rural Missouri counties in the abductions of Shawn Hornbeck and 13-year-old Ben Ownby. Shawn, now 15, was 11 when he was kidnapped in 2002 from near his home in Richwoods. Ben was abducted in Beaufort on Jan. 8, and a white pickup seen speeding away led police to Devlin. The boys were found Jan. 12 at Devlin's apartment in the St. Louis suburb of Kirkwood, about an hour from the towns where the boys were taken. A police source confirmed Wednesday that investigators have searched another Kirkwood apartment where Devlin lived previously. Police wouldn't say what, if anything, they were seeking. Landlord Graciela Hartenbach said she was told nothing was found during Tuesday's search, but added that investigators didn't tell her what they were looking for. Hartenbach said Devlin lived there for about six months in 1999. She recalled him as a quiet man who kept a clean but sparsely decorated apartment, paid the rent on time and ‘‘didn't give me any trouble.'' ‘‘He's very big and poker-faced - not too much expression,'' she said. Devlin, held in lieu of $1 million bail, has pleaded not guilty. Besides the kidnappings of Shawn and Ben, a special task force made up of federal, state and local police agencies is looking into whether Devlin was involved in other unsolved missing child cases in rural areas of eastern Missouri. The investigation also has crossed into Illinois, where Livingston County Sheriff Robert McCarty said Wednesday investigators are looking for links between Devlin and the unsolved 2003 killing of 7-year-old Dalton Mesarchik. Dalton was abducted from his front yard in Streator, Ill., on March 26, 2003. A fisherman found his body in the Vermilion River the next day. http://www.pontiacdailyleader.com/articles/2007/01/31/breaking_news/news01.txt

Posted on Thu, Feb. 01, 2007 Devlin investigation widens to Illinois case Photos appear to show boy with gun Associated Press ST. LOUIS - The investigation of child kidnapping suspect Michael Devlin has expanded, with authorities searching one of his previous homes and investigators in Illinois looking into a possible connection to the 2003 murder of a 7-year-old boy. Meanwhile, St. Louis television station KTVI showed photos it obtained, apparently of Shawn Hornbeck, one of two missing boys found Jan. 12 in Devlin's apartment in the St. Louis suburb of Kirkwood. One of the photos shows a boy pointing a handgun at the camera. Devlin, a 41-year-old pizzeria manager, faces kidnapping charges in two rural Missouri counties for the abductions of Shawn and 13-year-old Ben Ownby. Shawn, now 15, was 11 when he disappeared in 2002 from near his home in Richwoods. Ben vanished Jan. 8 in Beaufort. A police source confirmed Wednesday that investigators have searched another Kirkwood rental property, a house where Devlin lived before moving to the apartment where Shawn and Ben were found. Police wouldn't discuss the findings, but landlord Graciela Hartenbach said she was told nothing was found during the search on Tuesday. In addition to the kidnappings of Shawn and Ben, a special task force made up of federal, state and local police agencies is looking into whether Devlin could have played a role in at least three other unsolved missing child cases in rural areas of eastern Missouri. Charles "Arlin" Henderson disappeared in 1991 while riding his bike on a rural road in Moscow Mills. He was 11 at the time. Bianca Piper has been missing since March 10, 2005. The girl, then 14, was last seen walking on a gravel road near her home in Foley, Mo. And Scott Kleeschulte was 9 when he disappeared in 1988 in the St. Louis suburb of St. Charles. The investigation of Devlin has also crossed into Illinois. Livingston County Sheriff Robert McCarty said investigators are looking to see whether there is a possible link between Devlin and the unsolved 2003 killing of 7-year-old Dalton Mesarchik. Dalton was abducted from the front yard of his home in Streator, Ill., on March 26, 2003. A fisherman found his body in the Vermilion River the next day. Meanwhile, KTVI did not say how it obtained the photos that appear to be of Shawn, photos that the TV station said may have been taken inside Devlin's apartment. The boy isn't smiling in any of the photos. In one picture, the boy points a gun, a bandanna over much of his face and a ball cap tilted sideways. Another shows the same boy wearing the same bandanna and flashing a hand gesture. http://www.belleville.com/mld/belleville/news/16594614.htm

Vigil marks 5 years since Mesarchik murder 03/28/2008, 8:08 am Craig Wieczorkiewicz, craigw@mywebtimes.com, 815-673-6374 As she drove into Streator, Michelle Mesarchik noticed a sign lauding the city's Governor's Hometown Award won in 1998. Mesarchik, whose 7-year-old son Dalton was found murdered in the Vermilion River south of Streator five years ago today, thinks Streator isn't deserving of any award so long as the investigation into her son's death remains unsolved and the community does little to increase child safety awareness. "Dalton's murder has cast a shadow over Streator as a place unsafe and unworthy of any award," Mesarchik said Wednesday at a vigil for Dalton in front of Streator City Hall. Every year family and friends of Dalton stage vigils in memory of the motorcycle-loving boy affectionately called "Little Dude," and plan to continue doing so until his murderer is brought to justice. "We'll be back every year until then," Mesarchik said. "We're not giving up. We're not shutting up. We're not going away." Those comments elicited a hearty round of applause from the 75 or so people attending. The start of the candlelight vigil coincided with the arrival of dusk, with the night sky blanketing the event by hour's end. The gradual descent into darkness seemed fitting for an event marking the anniversary of a heinous murder that many Streatorites still talk about regularly. Dalton was abducted March 26, 2003, from in front of his Streator home, reportedly while waiting to be transported to a Bible study class. His body was found near the Vermilion Boat Club the next day as thousands of volunteers combed the city, searching for the boy. Police say he was bludgeoned to death with a small sledgehammer. Capt. Jill Rizzs, Illinois State Police Zone 5 Investigation Commander, said finding Dalton's killer remains an ISP priority and is "a tremendous responsibility." The Mesarchik investigation is not a cold case, as detectives continue to follow occasional leads and conduct related interviews, Rizzs said. Family friend Jenni Richards said 1,825 days after Dalton's murder, a "huge, gaping wound" remains incurable as long as the boy's killer is at large. Referring to the killer as a "monster," Richards admitted to praying daily for wrath and vengeance. "I pray that Dalton's face haunts the monster every second of every minute of every hour of every day, much like it does us," Richards said. "Until then, I pray that the torment of Dalton's cry for justice rings in its head relentlessly, much like it does for us." A significant part of the vigil focused not only on Dalton, but also on other murdered children as well. Mesarchik and Richards alternated reading the names of 60 murdered children as blue balloons were released one at a time in memory of them. Individual cardboard signs bearing each child's name, age, year and place of death were lined along the steps of Streator City Hall between three columns of white candles. That part of the vigil culminated with the reading of a 61st name, Dalton Mesarchik, at which time seven balloons were released in memory of the 7-year-old boy. "Forever 7," Mesarchik said as she and Richards both looked to the sky. Among the names read were those of Dwight siblings Ashley, 5, and Joshua Gleeson, 3, who were killed by their father, Patrick Gleeson, four months before Dalton was murdered. Their mother, Edna "Sue" Smith, attended the vigil and stood unannounced among the crowd. After the vigil ended, Smith told The Times she came to Streator to show support for what Mesarchik is doing to help people remember her son and realize the importance of increasing child safety. "I give her a lot of respect for keeping it alive, so people remember there's still a lot of bad out there that can harm our children," Smith said. "You've got to keep it alive somehow," she said. "In my case, it was solved and the man who did it is in prison. To everyone else, it's done and over. But not for me. It's something I'm living with every day, and it's the same for her. It's not easy." The vigil closed with a performance of the 3 Doors Down song, "When I'm Gone," sung by three of Dalton's schoolmates, Lauren Finkelstein, Kaitlin Gonzalez and Billy Darrow. They were accompanied by Lauren's father, Dr. Gary Finkelstein, on guitar. Dr. Finkelstein said he felt the performance was "a nice way to show support" in light of the effect Dalton's death had on the community. "We dealt with Dalton's death on many levels, having a child the same age as him, and my daughter was friends with him," Finkelstein said of his family. A popular rock tune when Dalton died, "When I'm Gone" includes the following refrain: "So hold me when I'm here / Right me when I'm wrong / Hold me when I'm scared / And love me when I'm gone." A recorded version of the song was played during Dalton's funeral. http://mywebtimes.com/archives/ottawa/display.php?id=355733
