SAN DIEGO -- District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis announced Tuesday that investigators from her office are seeking a 23-year-old defendant in an attempted murder case, who bailed out of jail and then failed to appear in court in San Diego.
Emanuel Rubio is charged with four counts each of attempted murder and assault with a semiautomatic firearm. He faces 76 years to life in prison if convicted.
"This defendant is clearly a danger to the community," Dumanis said. "By not honoring the court order to appear for his preliminary hearing, he has also now shown his disregard for the criminal justice system. We are asking for the public's help in bringing him to justice."
Rubio is accused of shooting two men multiple times in National City on Jan. 25, after one of the victims reportedly talked to the defendant's girlfriend at a party.
Prosecutors allege Rubio got into a fight with one of the men, pulled a gun out of his waistband and shot him. After the victim fell to the ground, Rubio allegedly stood over him and fired additional shots.
A second victim was injured when he began to run away and Rubio allegedly shot him twice in the back.
Rubio pleaded not guilty at his Feb. 5 arraignment.
He posted $400,000 bail on April 5, then failed to appear at his preliminary hearing on April 27.
A warrant has been issued for his arrest.
Anyone with information on Rubio's whereabouts was asked to call their local police department, the National City Police Department at 619-336-4474, or the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force at 619-557-6060, ext. 240.
