Ward Connerly, a beneficiary of affirmative action, said "Opponents should be taken out and horsewhipped." <"Activist: All should get fair shake/Connerly shares views on racial preferences," June 8, Page A3.> I am a white woman who opposes the anti-affirmative action ballot issue. I have read the proposed change to our Michigan Constitution, which is all encompassing and absolute. If passed, this would affect public education, bilingual programs and efforts to recruit girls to professions in science and technology and boys to nursing and teaching professions, non-traditional professions Michigan's economy needs.
Connerly says domestic shelters are still operating. But he did not mention that a women's domestic violence shelter in California was sued for using state funds for its program because it was mostly gender based. Can we afford litigation to continue women's programs?
He says "under-represented minorities" were not academically prepared for Berkeley and UCLA. Yet, all the students met the academic requirements, passed all the tests. He says, "Students of that background would do better on a different campus." Does this mean poor minority children need to stay in the back of the bus? Only attend community colleges, not the top-named colleges in the state?
