End Violence Against Women and Girls During War
We, the Undersigned, endorse the following petition: End Violence Against Women and Girls Target: United States Congress Sponsor: International Rescue Committee During the past 20 years sexual violence against women and girls has been a weapon of war. As many as 50,000 women and girls were raped during the war in Bosnia. And right now, rape is rampant in the Congo. Women and girls are raped and abused every day in almost every conflict around the world. But you can help. Tell your elected officials in Congress to: Fund programs that prevent violence and respond to incidents of rape against women and girls; Support efforts to help women and girls recover their dignity, health, livelihood, and families; Include anti-sexual violence initiatives in relevant international assistance programs. Tell Congress to make the fight against sexual violence a top priority for U.S. foreign policy and foreign assistance funding. Congratulations! Together, we surpassed our goal of getting 50,000 signatures to stop violence against women. But that was just the start. With the power of those signatures behind us, we’re now going to Congress to ask them to act on behalf of women and girls across the world affected by violence. This October, we’ll be delivering the petition with your signature to 106 members of Congress and pushing them to act! We want Congress to: *Fund programs that prevent violence and respond to incidents of rape against women and girls *Support efforts to help women and girls recover their dignity, health, livelihood, and families *Include anti-sexual violence initiatives in relevant international assistance programs Right now, we’re hard at work engaging the people who can help us make this a reality! Stay tuned for more information and updates. Together, we can put an end to violence against women. Thank you for your conscience and your support. The petition was closed on September 30th to prepare to deliver it to Congress. Be an Icon for the Children of Uganda The International Rescue Committee is partnering with Resolve Uganda and the GuluWalk to help bring an end to violence in Northern Uganda. This year, we invite you to participate in the 2007 Gulu Walk to show your support for this important mission. The original GuluWalk started with just two people in July of 2005 and has now grown into a worldwide movement for peace. GuluWalk was inspired by the gripping tale of the 'night commuters' and while the night commuting has stopped, the need to promote peace and step forward for these abandoned children has not. GuluWalk is no longer an effort by just two people, but is now being made possible by the support of many volunteers worldwide and the experience and compassion of numerous partner organizations. While there is progress on the ground, peace still eludes the Acholi of northern Uganda and only together can we make a difference in what former U.N. Under-Secretary General of Humanitarian Affairs Jan Egeland called “the world’s most neglected humanitarian crisis” and “one of the biggest scandals of our generation.” In the United States, join TeamIRC today by visiting https://secure.e2rm.com/registrant/StartUp.aspx?TSID=170573 In Canada, join TeamIRC today by visiting https://secure.e2rm.com/registrant/StartUp.aspx?TSID=171170 Internationally, join TeamIRC today by visiting https://secure.e2rm.com/registrant/StartUp.aspx?TSID=170585 To learn more about GuluWalk and the programs they support, visit http://guluwalk.com/programs Email Alert
