Mother Of 3 Stabbed To Death By Estranged Husband
(CBS 3) CHESWOLD Delaware Police said a mother of three was stabbed to death by her estranged husband in her Cheswold home Monday. Officials said the couple’s 9-year-old son witnessed the brutal ordeal.
Authorities said Wendy Kane, 35, was stabbed over 20 times inside her home on Brayton Place in the Lake Shore Village development just before 3 a.m.
Her estranged husband, Thomas Kane, 35, allegedly broke into the home, stabbing her repeatedly with a knife and a screwdriver in an upstairs bedroom, police said.
The couple’s 9-year-old son was awoken during the violent incident and fled to a nearby home to call for help. Thomas Kane attempted to flee from arriving officers, but was quickly apprehended with a bloody screwdriver still in his possession.
Wendy Kane was pronounced dead at the scene
The recently separated couple had been married for 10 years. Neighbors are shocked by the gruesome crime.
“They complemented each other,” said Michael Fuller, ”They did all the work in the yard, they put the fence up, they put the pool up, they built a deck in the back, they just always seemed like a very good couple.”
Police said they had been called to the house at least six times in the last six weeks. Mrs. Kane took out a protection order against her husband in November.
Thomas Kane was previously arrested for trying to violate the protection order, but was released by the local magistrate after receiving a psychiatric evaluation.
Now he remains in police custody, charged with first-degree murder, possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony, burglary, possession of a deadly weapon by a person prohibited, endangering the welfare of a child, resisting arrest, and criminal contempt of a family court order.
Police said the couple's 9-year-old son is an innocent victim of a horrible domestic crime.
“This is going to be with the child for the rest of his life. It’s a terrible tragedy and this child, basically for all intensive purposes, has lost both parents,” said Corporal Jeff Oldham of the Delaware State Police.
