Aug 19, 2008 2:40 pm US/Eastern Mom Pleads For 5-Year-Old's Safe Return LYNN (WBZ) ― Lynn police are searching for a 5-year-old boy who went missing over the weekend while in the care of his father, who is now facing charges. Prosecutors say Giovanni Gonzalez was dropped off at the Lynn home of his father, Ernesto Gonzalez, on Friday. When the boy's mother, Daisy Colon, went to pick him up on Sunday, the father said their son wasn't with him. Police say Gonzalez, 36, has been uncooperative. He was charged with child endangerment. He's being held on $500,000 bail after pleading not guilty in court Monday. Court documents obtained on Tuesday indicate that Gonzalez has faced assault and battery charges in the past. He has been arrested three times -- most recently in 2001, when he allegedly beat his girlfriend and then pulled a knife on police. Tracey Contreras, talked about her cousin, Gonzalez, after learning of his arrest. "He's a good guy. He does have previous children from other women, and nothing like this ever went down… This is just out of the blue. Everyone has their problems. We never thought it would come to this… (Giovanni) was an awesome little boy… very lovable." Prosecutors say they are concerned for the boy's safety because the father has refused to explain how he suffered a cut on his hand. According to Giovanni's mom, Gonzalez wanted nothing to do with his son until recently. She tells WBZ's Sera Congi the two have been spending weekends together without any problems for the past couple of weeks. Colon used the news cameras on Tuesday to send a message to her son. "The only thing I have to say is Giovanni, I miss you, I want you home as soon as you can. Just dial 911, of just run out so somebody can see you, honey. And I really, really, really miss you honey." Giovanni is 4-feet-1 and weighs 40 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing jeans, a red shirt and "Spider Man" sandals. He was carrying a "Transformers" backpack. He has a faded skin pigmentation mark on the lower right side of his chest and a small scar above his eyebrow. It is not unusual for police to issue an Amber Alert when there is a missing child, but officials have not done so for Giovanni. There are three requirements needed for an Amber Alert to be issued. In this case, there are two that have not been met. There is no description of the vehicle they are looking for, and they don't have a description of the person they believe took him. Anyone with information is asked to call Lynn police at 781.595.2000. http://wbztv.com/local/missing.boy.lynn.2.798400.html

Missing Lynn boy sparks massive search By Dan O'Brien / The Daily Item LYNN - The mother of 5-year-old Giovanni Gonzalez sobbed in a Lynn courtroom Monday while trying to understand how her son went missing and why his father won't tell police where he is. Ernesto Gonzalez, 36, of 2 Brightwood Terrace #2, Lynn, was arrested at 3 a.m. Monday and charged with child endangerment after refusing to tell investigators the boy's location. Daisy Colon, of East Boston, told police she dropped off her son at Gonzalez' home Friday night for a weekend visit. She returned to pick him up Sunday night, but when she arrived Gonzalez said their son wasn't with him. After tireless efforts to get Gonzalez to tell police what happened, Lynn and state police issued an "Endangered Child Advisory" late Monday afternoon. Essex County First Assistant District Attorney John Dawley requested $500,000 cash bail at Giovanni's arraignment in Lynn District Court, which Judge Stacey Fortes-White granted. "We have a 5-year-old boy who disappeared (and) we have a father who for all intents and purposes will not cooperate," Dawley said. A visibly upset Colon said outside court she couldn't understand why the judge didn't press Gonzalez for more answers. "Why didn't she ask him about my son?" Colon said before a court advocate led her away. A massive police search was underway Monday night. State Police homicide detectives searched Gonzalez' apartment building, while nearly 30 units from Lynn and State Police searched the woods near High Rock Tower. Hamilton Avenue resident Jim Bell began searching the woods himself after seeing news reports of the missing child. He found a blanket and pointed it out to investigators. "When I see something like this on TV, it kills me," Bell said. Margarita Laboy, Giovanni's paternal great aunt, made an emotional plea for the boy to return home safe. "Just come home Giovanni, come home. Call 911 and let us know that you're all right. Come home. We need you," Laboy said. "He's a beautiful boy, an intelligent boy." According to Dawley, neighbors reported seeing Giovanni and his dad playing ball together this weekend, despite the father's claims that he didn't see his son at all. In addition, Dawley said Gonzalez refused to tell police how he suffered a noticeable laceration to his left finger. In court, the prosecutor said Gonzalez has a previous conviction of assault and battery with a knife. "(It) gives us cause for concern," Dawley said. Dawley said Gonzalez had made statements to the boy's mother about wanting to take him on a vacation to Puerto Rico and investigators are looking into that angle. "Yes, Puerto Rico is of some concern to us," Dawley said. In court, Dawley argued, "Not only does he know the whereabouts of the boy but we're very concerned about his well being." The prosecutor said Gonazalez gave several inconsistent statements to police, including that he never had talked to the boy's mother this weekend. However, phone records proved the two had spoken, according to Dawley. "Our focus has been on this defendant and no one else," Dawley said. "We're hopeful that between the resources of the Lynn Police and the State Police ... that we're hoping someone will come forward (with information)." Despite evidence of a violent past, family members aren't sure if Gonzalez would harm his boy. "He's not capable of hurting his son. No, I don't think so," Laboy said. Tracey Contreras, Gonzalez' cousin, said through tears she is very worried about Giovanni. "When you're a mother... it's going to affect you if you have a heart," Contreras said. "I just want Giovanni home and if anybody's seen him please call the Lynn police. That's all I'm asking." Giovanni is described as a Hispanic male, weighs 40 pounds, is about 4-foot-2 and has a slight birthmark on his inner left ankle. He was last seen wearing blue jeans, a red shirt and "Spiderman" sandals. He was also holding a black "Transformers" backpack. Monday's disappearance has many Lynners remembering the case of Jesus De La Cruz, the 6-year-old boy who went missing from Park Street on Sept. 28, 1996. De La Cruz was last seen being lured away by a man who promised him a new bicycle. The man has never been charged due to lack of evidence and De Le Cruz has never been found. In a July interview with retired Lynn Police Capt. Joe Rowe, the investigator said De La Cruz' father Juan still calls the department regularly looking for information. De La Cruz would now be 18-years-old. If you have any information about Gonzalez or De La Cruz, please call Lynn police at 781-595-2000. http://www.itemlive.com/articles/2008/08/19/news/news01.txt

Aug 18, 2008 11:19 pm US/Eastern Boy, 5, Missing; Father Charged With Disappearance LYNN (WBZ) ― Police are looking for a young boy who has been missing since Friday. Giovanni Gonzalez, 5, was last seen in the area of 2 Brightwood Terrace around 4 p.m. on Aug. 15. According to police, a missing persons report was filed by Giovanni's mother, Daisy Colon, of East Boston on Sunday. She told police she dropped her son off to his father, Ernesto Gonzalez, 36, at his Brightwood Terrace apartment in Lynn Friday afternoon. When she went to pick her son up, no one was answered the door. Colon then called police who entered the home and found the Gonzalez alone in the apartment. Gonzalez was arrested on Monday and charged with child endangerment in connection with Giovanni's disappearance. He pleaded not guilty and was ordered held on $500,000 cash bail. According to police, despite Ernesto's arrest, Giovanni's whereabouts remain unknown. Police have been in Gonzalez' apartment since Sunday night, searching for clues that may help them find Gionvanni. Neighbor Paul King tells WBZ's Karen Anderson that police have been checking dumpsters, going house to house and checking basements in Lynn. "He is the sweetest little thing you would want to be around," said Desiree Padro, Colon's neighbor. "It's just heartbreaking to know a parent is missing her child... All of our hearts are breaking because he is a sweet, innocent child." "We just want him home," said Susan McCarthy, a friend of Colon. "That's it. We just want him home with his mother." Tracey Contreras, talked about her cousin, Gonzalez, after learning of his arrest. "He's a good guy. He does have previous children from other women, and nothing like this ever went down… This is just out of the blue. Everyone has their problems. We never thought it would come to this… (Giovanni) was an awesome little boy… very lovable." Police say Gonzalez is not cooperating with them. Officials also mentioned Gonzalez has a cut on his left hand and is not telling police how he got it. Giovanni weighs approximately 40 pounds and is 4 feet 1 inch tall with black hair and brown eyes. When last seen, he was wearing blue denim jeans, a red T-shirt, a silver braided chain and black Spiderman sandals. He was carrying a black backpack that had the Transformers robot characters on it and which contained some of his clothes and toys. He has a faded skin pigmentation mark on the lower right side of his chest and a small scar above his eyebrow. Police have talked to witnesses who claim they saw Gonzalez with a child over the weekend. Anyone with information about this little boy is asked to call Lynn police at 781.595.2000. http://wbztv.com/local/missing.lynn.boy.2.797997.html

Aug 23, 2008 3:37 pm US/Eastern Police Hold Out Hope That Missing Boy Is Alive LYNN (WBZ) ― Police looking for a 5-year-old boy found a bloody mop in his father's Lynn apartment, but the district attorney says investigators still hope the boy is alive. Essex County District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett told The Daily Item of Lynn on Friday night that finding blood "is always a concern," but it's not yet known whose blood is on the mop. Lynn police will be canvassing neighborhoods and distributing flyers Saturday. Blodgett said a door-to-door search for Giovanni Gonzalez, including roadblocks, is also planned this weekend. Police say the goal of the roadblocks is to gather information from people who routinely travel through the area around Brightwood Terrace on a Saturday. Police say they will work on establishing a timeline for the investigation. The Item reported Friday investigators sought a warrant for a follow-up search of the home after the mop tested positive for blood. An affidavit also said the father had "an open cut and a bandaged finger," which he would not explain. Ernesto Gonzalez has pleaded not guilty to child endangerment. He's held on $500,000 bail. Prosecutors say the boy was dropped off at his father's home Aug. 15. When the boy's mother went to pick him up two days later, Gonzalez said their son wasn't there. Investigators received a tip Thursday that led them to search Flax Pond. It turned out to be a false alarm as police recovered the remains of an animal. Their search has spanned through Lynn all the way to Puerto Rico where Ernesto Gonzalez is from. Colon has also made pleas to his family for information about her son's whereabouts. http://wbztv.com/local/bloody.mop.found.2.801612.html

Giovanni's teacher holding out hope By Dan Baer / The Daily Item LYNN - Nancy Celona picks up the paper and watches the news with hope every day, on the verge of tears praying to hear that 5-year-old Giovanni Gonzalez has been found alive. The story of the Lynn boy missing since Aug. 16 has really hit home for Celona and the rest of the staff at the now-closed St. Mary's School in East Boston where Giovanni was a student and Celona worked as a computer teacher and classroom aid. "It was the worst thing (learning that Giovanni had gone missing) - I heard it on TV, I wasn't even looking at the screen, I just heard 'Giovanni,'" she said during a phone interview from her East Boston home Thursday. "I still didn't believe it until I looked and I saw his name on the screen." Celona taught the kindergarten student for a portion of each week, usually in the computer lab. She remembered Giovanni as energetic and full of life, always smiling and having fun. "He was just a totally energetic kid, it was just constant the whole 45 minutes that we had him in a week 'Giovanni over here' or 'c'mon Giovanni.' It was just constant," she said. "He was so excited the day he was finally able to type a 'G' on the screen for his first name. He was just such a happy, energetic kid." A victim of cuts by the Archdiocese, St. Mary's closed for good in June, leaving Celona and her colleagues without a home base to meet and show support for Giovanni once they heard the news. She is in close contact with other staffers from the school, and everyone hoping to hear good news soon. "The school closed permanently in June, so it is sad. I drove by there the other day and it was all boarded up. We would have liked to have been able to meet there and hold something for him," she said. "The teachers that know him are networking with one another. I spoke to his classroom teacher (Wednesday) night, and we were still just in disbelief." As news surrounding the investigation into Giovanni's disappearance changes daily, Celona and her former colleagues experience a roller coaster of emotions, which at the moment are hopeful. District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett said Wednesday that investigators are still confident they will find Giovanni alive after testing blood samples from a mop found in Gonzalez' father's apartment. Along with hope, Celona also feels anger toward Ernesto Gonzalez, who has been tight-lipped with information about his son's whereabouts. "There is also an anger seeing the father who won't say anything. How can you not say anything, I mean can't they make him say something? Oh, I am on the verge of tears whenever I see his face on TV," she said. "My mind is going in all different directions, it made me nervous because they found that mop covered in blood. My mother just called me and said she saw on the news that they think he is still alive, so that is a very good thing." Giovanni split time between his mother Daisy Colon, who lives in East Boston and his father's home on Brightwood Terrace in Lynn. Celona said she did not know the family very well, but sensed that it was not a happy home life at times for Giovanni. "I just hope that they find him and that he is ok," she said. This really hits home." http://www.itemlive.com/articles/2008/09/01/news/news03.txt

Sep 5, 2008 2:07 pm US/Eastern Questions Haunt Missing Lynn Boy's Mother Reporting Karen Anderson LYNN (WBZ) ― It's been three weeks since Giovanni Gonzalez's mother dropped the 5 year old off with his father in Lynn, and there is no sign of the little boy. Giovanni's mother, Daisy Colon, says she sleeps with his pillow, to try to keep him close, just hoping that he will come home. "I think about him. Is he scared? Is he eating? Is he asking questions like always? Is he being taken care of? Is someone with him? Is he asking for mommy?" Colon said through tears. "I feel he is close, but at the same time, where is he? Is he playing? Is he happy? Is he crying? All those questions are haunting me right now and not knowing is killing me," she added. District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett said police had a meeting Thursday, and they are again expanding their search. He said the State Police SERT team, based in Framingham, will be coming in to assist in areas they have already checked as well as new areas. "We've explored every lead to date," Blodgett said. "We've had information he was located in Lawrence as recently as last Saturday, and our State police and Lawrence Police Department were up at midnight looking at an apartment. It proved not to be fruitful but that's the kind of effort we're going to continue to expend." Giovanni's picture will also be up on a billboard in Lynn soon. It was the idea of a 16-year-old young man, Richard Yearwood, of Lynn. He said he wanted to do something to help, and got the idea for the billboard. Yearwood said he called Clear Channel Communications, which owns the billboard, and they agreed to put up Giovanni and his father's picture to try to generate new leads for police. When Giovanni's mother learned what Yearwood did, it brought tears to her eyes. "I think that's amazing," she said. "I'm speechless right now. Coming from a 16 year old -- I thought it was from the adults and owners. I know Giovanni is going appreciate that a lot. It's amazing that a 16 year old had that thought." Investigators say Ernesto Gonzalez is still not cooperating with police. He remains locked up and is being held on $500,000, charged with child endangerment. http://wbztv.com/local/bloody.mop.found.2.810966.html

Caylee Anthony A Victim of A Disturbing New Trend? Posted on October 5th, 2008 by Jan Barrett in Florida News, Massachusetts News, Michigan News, Society and Culture Caylee Anthony has been missing since mid June and now everyone except for the Anthony’s are saying the little girl is dead. Her mother, Casey Anthony has been named as a suspect now in Caylee’s disappearance. Casey refuses to talk to authorities and won’t tell anyone the truth about what happened to her daughter which is causing a public outcry from many angry citizens. Equusearch will be returning to start their search once again. Deputy Director of Equusearch Mandy Albritton said, “This case has had such national exposure that I truly believe that if this baby was out there alive, someone would have seen her and brought her home by now. It’s been way too long for a little 3-year old to be missing.” Another child that I reported about that was missing, five year old Giovanni Gonzalez, has been missing since August 15 when his mother dropped him off for a weekend visit with his father. At the end of the weekend when his mother, Daisy Colon went to pick up her son, she couldn't get any answer at the door. When she finally contacted the police and they entered the apartment, the child’s father, Ernesto Gonzalez denied even having the child that weekend. He was arrested and charged with child endangerment and was held on a $500,000 bail. His attorney, Lawrence McGuire, tried getting the bail lowered to $14,000 which is the amount Gonzalez has saved in the bank. The request was denied by Judge Howard Whitehead. Now I hear this morning that yet another child has come up missing that suddenly disappeared out of the blue Thursday when her mother’s boyfriend took her with him and he stopped at a gas station in Detroit. Jamrul Hussain, told his girlfriend, Nilufa Begum that her two year old daughter, Tangena was in the car with him Thursday night when he stopped at the gas station for a pack of gum. He told the investigators that he left the little girl in the locked car but when he returned she was gone. Hussain didn’t notify police right away though. He went and picked up Begun from work and told her what happened. Then they returned to the station to search for her but couldn’t find her. Then they called the police. Apparently the gas station does have a video of Hussain at the gas station but it doesn’t show his car there or the little girl. Hussain was arrested for sexual assault against a minor in an apparent unrelated case. After seeing him on Fox 2 News the victim notified police. He is being interviewed by the police but it is not known if it is about the sexual assault case or about the missing two year old. He was held for 48 hours after Tangena disappeared while police tried to gather any clues they could about her disappearance. I have a real problem with all these cases with the missing children. Who is protecting these little ones against the bad guys? When the guilty party is arrested and held, I see all the taxpayers money spent to give the arrested ones their “rights” but what about the rights of little Caylee, or Giovanni or Tangena. What about all the other children out there that are missing and never found that just disappear? I would love to name each and every one of them but there are too many so I chose these three. My heart and prayers do go out to each one of them though. My question is how anyone can harm an innocent child. They can’t possibly defend themselves when attacked. They never asked to be brought into this world. They should not be made to suffer from the hands of some sicko that gets their thrills out of killing children. To take the life of a child simply because the child was not fitting in with your lifestyle is no excuse. There are way too many childless families in the world today that would be more than happy to take an unwanted child in and raise them as their own and give them a good home. If only these sick people would realize that. My final words here again are my prayers are with these children. May God Bless each and every one of them. Giovanni still focus of police, lawyers By Thor Jourgensen / The Daily Item LYNN - His face is the picture of boyish glee beaming down on Wyoma Square, a reminder that the search for five year-old Giovanni Gonzalez is entering its fourth month. The East Boston kindergartener has not been seen since his father's neighbors saw him playing outside 2 Brightwood Terrace on Aug. 16. His mother went to pick him up at Ernesto Gonzalez' apartment a day later and summoned police after she could not locate her son. Ernesto Gonzalez told police he never saw the boy that weekend and, according to the District Attorney's office, he has not discussed the boy's whereabouts or fate since Aug. 17. "It's a gut-wrenching case," said Michael MacDonald, a Lynn attorney all too familiar with missing children cases. He represented Magdalena Rodriguez, the mother of Jesus De La Cruz, who vanished from Park Street on Sept. 28, 1996. MacDonald said Gonzalez' disappearance and his father's silence remain conversation topics in Lynn District Court. "This is a little boy; he's the father. You hope he would do anything to help the boy. That's the moral issue. The legal issue is quite different," MacDonald said. He said Ernesto Gonzalez' refusal to speak to authorities from his cell in the Essex House of Correction reflects the wishes of "any good defense attorney" to protect his client. Another local attorney, Eric Jarosz, said the caliber of the two attorneys on opposing sides of the Gonzalez case underscores its seriousness. Top public defender Lawrence Maguire represents Gonzalez and prosecutor John Dawley has appeared for District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett on hearings involving Gonzalez. Gonzalez pleaded innocent to a child endangerment charge on Aug. 18 and is due back in court on Nov. 18. Maguire declined to comment on the case Thursday. Police, the DA's office and the Center for Missing and Exploited Children remain determined to find the boy. Days after his disappearance, the Center posted appeals for help finding him in Massachusetts and Puerto Rico. The boy's mother told police on Aug. 17 that Giovanni wanted to visit a half brother on the island. "That's our focus still," said Center senior case manager Gary Gardiner earlier this month. Police searches in Puerto Rico have not produced leads to date but police have not abandoned search plans there or locally. "We ask anyone with any information to contact Lynn police and help us bring Giovanni home," DA's spokesman Steve O'Connell said. Daisy Colon also remains committed to finding her son. "I don't let negative thoughts come to mind. I just try to stay positive." http://www.itemlive.com/articles/2008/11/02/news/news02.txt

Nov 11, 2008 11:21 pm US/Eastern Missing Boy's Mom Pleads For His Release Reporting Christina Hager LYNN (WBZ) ― Daisy Colon says she can't sleep at night. Nearly three months have passed since her 5-year-old son Giovanni Gonzalez went missing. In that time she has talked with police every day. The leads and tips that initially came streaming into the detective unit have slowed down. That has the district attorney putting out a renewed plea to the public for information. Daisy Colon is joining them. "Giovanni's close. I feel it, it's like a mother's instinct," she told us Tuesday night. "I know he's close. I know that he's wondering or he's worried. It's like a sense that I have." She dropped the boy off for a visit at his father's apartment in Lynn one Friday in August. When she returned to pick him up two days later, there was no answer at the door. Within hours, police would arrest the boy's father, Ernesto Gonzalez, who said he did not know where Giovanni was. He's been behind bars ever since, and is due back in court Nov. 19 on child endangerment charges. "He knows where Giovanni is, and for whatever reason, he's not saying," said Colon, who lives in East Boston. If her son is out there, she has a message for him. "I haven't forgotten you," she said. "I'm praying and I'm hoping that someone does talk soon." And to the person who may have Giovanni, she said: "Let him go. It's been almost three months now and he needs his mom as well I need him." http://wbztv.com/local/Giovanni.Gonzalez.Daisy.2.862152.html

2 min 51 sec ago Father of missing Lynn boy offers no clues (NECN: Brad Puffer, Lynn, Mass.) - The father of a missing five-year-old boy from Lynn, Massachusetts was back in court today on child endangerment charges, but he's still not talking. 36-year-old Ernesto Gonzalez appeared in Lynn District Court for the first time since his arrest on child endangerment charges three months ago. But, this brief and typical pre-trial hearing offered no further clues to the location of his five-year-old son Giovanni. "We are asking the public's help in giving us any tip or nay information they have about his case to help find this little boy," said Steve O'Connell of the Essex DA's office. Daisy Colon, Giovanni's mother, sat in the front row. She has only talked to Ernesto once since his arrest. Colon says she dropped her son off at his apartment for a weekend visit in august, but Giovanni was gone when she returned to pick him up. There has been no sign of him since. "This case has taken us from Lynn to Lawrence to Puerto Rico with no sign of him yet, but we are not going to give up." Investigators have traveled also to Florida, believing he may have been taken there. They have searched a nearby pond with divers and several areas with dogs - all looking for clues to what happened. While many leads have now dried up, the district attorneys office still believes someone holds the clue that could break this case. "Even if you saw Ernesto that weekend without Giovanni please tell us when and where that was we will follow every lead we get and we will spare no expense and we will spare no manpower in order to try and bring this little boy home." http://www.necn.com/Boston/New-England/2008/11/18/Father-of-missing-Lynn-boy/1227042736.html

Newspaper: Father Says He Killed Missing Son Last Edited: Thursday, 27 Nov 2008, 7:42 AM EST Created: Wednesday, 26 Nov 2008, 11:04 PM EST MIDDLETON, Mass. (AP) -- A man arrested after his 5-year-old son disappeared during an August visit tells a newspaper he stabbed the boy to death. In a jailhouse interview Wednesday, Ernesto Gonzalez Jr. told The Boston Globe that after he killed his son, Giovanni, he dismembered the boy in the tub of his Lynn apartment and discarded the body parts. Gonzalez said he didn't intend to kill his son, it just "happened." He told the Globe he loved his son and is "regretful." Gonzalez has been held on $500,000 bail since his August arrest on a child endangerment charge. Essex County officials were skeptical about the confession, saying there's no evidence to corroborate it.
