Guilty Plea Entered in Federal Obscenity Case
A Louisiana man pleaded guilty in federal court Monday to charges of distributing obscene materials, KTBS-TV reported.
Daniel Smart admitted selling obscene videos out of his home in Shreveport.
State and local police seized thousands of videos and DVDs containing images of bondage and bestiality from his home. The resulting investigation uncovered a Web site that offered the material for sale as well as solicited volunteers to appear in future productions.
Hugo Holland, assistant district attorney, said when officials learned the material was crossing state lines, it became a federal crime.
"We were going to handle it locally," he said, "until the customs and postal officials realized they had enough stuff leaving and going across state lines where they could interest (federal prosecutors) in it."
Smart will be sentenced Oct. 3 and faces up to five years in prison.
