Hawaii's Amber Alert System
Dear , Governor Lingle's office has forwarded your email regarding Hawaii's Amber Alert. Hawaii's Amber Alert is called the Maile Amber Alert, named after Maile Gilbert of Hawaii who was abducted and killed 1985 and Amber Hagerman of Texas. Hawaii has only issued one Maile Amber Alert in June 2005, the child was recovered successfully. Hawaii's statewide plan was finalized in February 2005. We had worked with all four county police departments in putting a statewide plan together and are still working with them in revising the plan as we learn along the way. The police departments are considering some kind of internet notification but we have not reached that point yet, we are still working out the fine details with the other agencies like the Department of Transportation, State Civil Defense, Hawaii Broadcast Association, etc. involved in the Maile Amber Alert. The Missing Child Center-Hawaii, as the State Clearinghouse, does have a website, www.missingchildcenterhawaii.com where we post Hawaii's missing and abducted children. Due to the urgency of time involved in the issuance of a Maile Amber Alert, we do not have any plans to use the internet for the Maile Amber Alert at this time. We may consider the possibilities at a later date when we can research it more. We thank you for you concern for our State and I hope that I answered your questions. If you have any further concerns or questions, please feel free to contact me at 808-586-1449. UPDATE!!! New Reply!! To: fromwhisperstoroars@yahoo.com Subject: Re: Contact Governor From: Bridget.P.Holthus@hawaii.gov Date: Mon, 24 Oct 2005 17:28:31 -1000 Dear Name Removed: Governor Lingle and Lt. Governor Aiona's office has forwarded your message to the Department of the Attorney General. Thank you for your concern about missing children. The Missing Child Center - Hawaii, which serves as the state clearinghouse for information regarding missing children, is a program within the Department of the Attorney General's Criminal Justice Division. There is a direct link from the Attorney General's home page (hawaii.gov/ag) to the web site for the Missing Child Center - Hawaii (www.missingchildcenterhawaii.com). Information regarding missing and abducted children is posted on that site, and all news releases issued by the Attorney General are posted immediately on the Attorney General's home page. Hawaii's Amber Alert system is called the Maile-Amber Alert. It is named after Maile Gilbert of Hawaii, who was abducted and murdered in 1985, and Amber Hagerman of Texas. Since the establishment of the statewide Maile Ambert Alert system, Hawaii has had only one occasion to issue an alert. In that case, in June 2005, the child was recovered successfully in less than one hour. Our Maile Amber Alert partners include State Civil Defense, the state Department of Transportation, the police departments of all four of Hawaii's counties, and the Hawaii Association of Broadcasters, Inc. Together with our partners, we work continuously to refine the Maile Amber Alert system, and are considering more ways to make use of the Internet. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. Very truly yours, Bridget Holthus Special Assistant Dept of the Attorney General 425 Queen Street Honolulu Hawaii 96813 tel: (808) 586-1284 fax: (808) 586-1239 bridget.p.holthus@hawaii.gov www.hawaii.gov/ag (I have free long distance so trust me I won't hesitate) :D
