MIAMI, Fla. -- The man known to residents in hurricane-prone areas in the U.S. from his countless hours of television interviews is retiring.
National Hurricane Center Director Max Mayfield told staffers Friday that he will retire in January.
Mayfield, 57, has led the Hurricane Center since May 2000.
Hurricane Center spokesman Frank Lepore told the Associated Press that Mayfield has been traveling nonstop. Besides monitoring the storms themselves, Mayfield also oversees hurricane awareness programs in nearly every coastal state.
He became well-known after 1992's Hurricane Andrew as a hurricane specialist, and he informed South Florida residents what to expect from the killer storm in what some called his soothing voice with an Oklahoma accent.
