I'm on a rant!http://denverpost.ezboard.com/fdenverpostopinionfrm10.showMessage?topicID=32.topic
Remove Amber’s Name for the Alert System
The Amber Alert System was named after 9 year old Amber Hagerman, who was the victim of a kidnapping, rape and murder. We all know her story due to the fact the system was born from her tragedy.
But does the system work? Many Police and law makers will say yes it does. If you look for yourself you will see that not only does it have major flaws it is a disgrace. The memory of the sweet girl it is named after is being tarnished. Out of the alerts around 200 children have been found. But what about the one’s who deserve alerts and never get one?
We as the public find this number acceptable when the reality is it isn’t. Look at the number of alerts issued per year in your state. Some boast of 5 alerts for the year. But those are the lucky few who meet the criteria for an Amber Alert to be issued. Some lack as little as one word, Endangered. Or in the case of a 15 year old girl in Arizona who has been kidnapped, is endangered, has called home begging for help. The Police have a suspect, description, vehicle description, license plate and direction of possible travel. So where is the Amber Alert. She meets and exceeds the criteria.
Her name is Alexandra Marie Rodriguez from El Mirage Arizona. You haven’t heard of her? She has only been missing since November 29, 2005. On the 30th she managed to make a collect call to a family friend saying she is being held against her will and is terrified. Yet Arizona sees no reason for an Amber Alert. The suspect may be taking her to California so they have been alerted to look for them. What about the public? Police are constantly saying they need the publics help solving crimes does this child not count? Is this not a situation where the publics help is greatly needed?
I have personally emailed Governors, Department of Justice Assistant Attorney General Regina B. Schofield who is in charge of the National Amber Alert System, Attorney General Gonzales, President and Mrs. Bush. Begging for them to review the Alert System . One member of the Governors Office in Massachusetts is the only one to answer me. Unless you count the auto reply from the White House.
What do we have to do to get the attention of Elected Officials? Do I have to go to the Crawford Ranch and hold up a huge sign saying “President Bush ,Could ya check your email! The Amber Alert System Sucks!” Or go back to Washington and Stand outside the Congress Building with a banner saying ” Cut Elected Officials Paychecks to Improve the Amber Alert System”
My best friend and I opened a web site that covers everything from Sex Offender Laws to missing children and adults. Amber Alerts are a big part of what we cover also and it rips us up inside to see it being misused and ignored. Yes all 50 States are Amber Plan compliant BUT not all 50 have systems. Virginia for example only focuses on the hoaxes they have had in the last several years and looking like fools by putting out Amber Alerts. I ask you what is more important saving a child’s life or looking stupid?
So unless Elected Officials and Government starts taking the lives of our children seriously I ask they take poor Ambers name off the flawed and almost useless Amber Alert system. She deserves a better memorial and our children deserve to be better protected.
Sincerely,
Themis Eternal
