A Megan's Law sex offender who pleaded guilty to failing to notify police about his address but who fled before sentencing is being sought by authorities.
Jamil Reed, 31, who drew four years' probation in 1996 after pleading guilty to a sexual assault, was facing 18 months in prison for violating Megan's Law and the terms of community supervision for life that came with his earlier sentence.
Reed was indicted in September on three counts of failing to notify authorities of his whereabouts. He pleaded guilty in March.
But Reed failed to show in Superior Court, New Brunswick, for his June 20 sentencing.
Reed originally was charged in Union County in 1995 with two counts of sexual assault. He pleaded to one in September 1996.
He has served state prison time for burglary, receiving stolen property and failing to register as a Megan's Law sex offender before.
Reed is 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighs about 145 pounds. He has several tattoos on both arms.
His last listed addresses were on the 20 block of Arbor Circle in Edison and on the 100 block of Walnut Street in East Orange. He has also gone by the name James Reed.
The Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office is asking anyone with information on the fugitive to call (732) 745-3362 during weekdays and (732) 745-3300 on nights and weekends.
Authorities are urging anyone coming into contact with Reed not to try to apprehend him.
The Prosecutor's Office is offering rewards of up to $500 for information leading to the capture of fugitives wanted on charges in the county.
