Fairfax County Police Trying To Identify Woman In Cold Case Remains Discovered In 1993 Still Not Identified POSTED: 12:58 pm EDT October 24, 2006 UPDATED: 8:07 pm EDT October 24, 2006 FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. -- It's a cold case that still troubles Fairfax County detectives: A young woman whose remains were found in northern Virginia 13 years ago. She had a gap between her two front teeth and probably had large, bushy, hair. But investigators don't know a whole lot more. That’s because they don't know who she was. Det. Steve Milefsky of the Farifax County Police Department said it started on Dec. 6, 1993 when a construction crew was building a subdivision out in Centreville on Sharpsburg Drive. According to Milefsky, a worker found the skull just lying on top of the ground while clearing some brush in the woods. Next to the skull was her skeleton, covered up. "This appeared to be a shallow above ground grave. There were leaves and dirt covering the bones," said Milefsky. Dr. Douglas Owsley, a Smithsonian anthropologist, helped remove the remains and examined them. "In his opinion, it was a white female. She was probably 27 to 34 years old. She was about five foot one to five foot three. She had a lot of cavities and a lot of damage to her teeth based on decay," said Milefsky. He concluded she'd been buried for one to six years. Investigators also found a pair of shoes, a hair pick, a banana clip, an earring, a "lifesavers" clothing label, and bits of synthetic material. According to Milefsky, police were able to determine the woman had been stabbed several times in the upper part of her body. Police said they have checked over 150 different missing people against the skeleton and they have all been eliminated for one reason or another. Her bones have been taken to the FBI lab in Quantico where, if they can extract DNA, they will search for matches in a missing persons data bank. "And once we find out who the person is, I'm sure there'll be an avalanche of information about who she was, who her associates were, who she was running around with at the time, what she might be doing out here," said Milefsky. Police are asking people to focus on some of the young woman's distinguishing features. "One was that she didn't take care of her teeth. The second one is that there's a gap in her teeth, between her two front teeth. And she probably had large, bushy, hair," said Milefsky People who think they may have information about this case can call Fairfax County Police Crimesolvers at 1-866-411-TIPS. http://www.nbc4.com/news/10146427/detail.html
