The Greenfield Common Council voted unanimously Wednesday night to approve an ordinance that limits where sex offenders can live.
Greenfield aldermen had rejected the ordinance 3-2 on Jan. 20.
Within the past week, two sex offenders moved to Greenfield.
The offenders are Edwin L. Nufer, 49, and
Jennifer L. Coe, 30, according to the state's sex offender registry.
Nufer was convicted in 2004 of fourth-degree sexual assault. He lives in the 3600 block of S. 108th St., the registry says.
Coe was convicted in 1998 of second-degree sexual assault of a child and lives in the 3700 block of S. 34th St., according to the registry.
Nufer's conviction was in Waukesha County for a misdemeanor, and
Coe's was in Milwaukee County for a felony, according to court records.
Brad Wentlandt, deputy inspector of the Greenfield Police Department, said Wednesday that Coe would not have been allowed to live where she does if the ordinance had been in effect.
Nufer likely would not have been allowed to live where he does, although a precise measurement would need to be done, Wentlandt said.
The ordinance prohibits sex offenders from living within 1,000 feet of certain facilities, including schools and parks. That covers about 60% to 70% of the city, Wentlandt said.
Wentlandt said he did not know whether Nufer or Cole knew before moving to Greenfield that the city did not restrict where sex offenders could live.
He noted that the ordinance will not apply to them or the other 35 sex offenders who already live in Greenfield and are required to notify the state of where they live.
Milwaukee is the only community bordering Greenfield that does not have a sex offender ordinance, Wentlandt said. Franklin, Greendale, Oak Creek and Hales Corners do, he said.
The state registry, which can be searched by location and by name of offender, is at offender.doc.state.wi.us/public.
