LEE COUNTY, N.C. -- As the search for Michelle Bullard entered its third night, and with little to no real leads to go on, Lee County sheriff's detectives knew it was time for the family to make a heartfelt plea to the public. "As Michelle's mother I'm pleading for anyone who has any information to please contact the Lee County Sheriff's Department," said Kathy Riojas before a crowd of news cameras late Wednesday afternoon. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Video: Video Of Riojas' Statement Video: Mother Of Missing Lee County Woman Asks Public For Help -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The mother of 23 year old Michelle Bullard made an emotional plea for her daughter's safe return. "We love her we miss her and we want her back in our arms one more time," said Riojas. Detectives said Bullard was visiting with friends when a masked man barged into the home with a gun. They said he tied up Bullard's friends and then left with her. After searching a nearby pond and woods, detectives are now relying on leads from the public, not knowing for sure if Bullard is still in the area. Kathy Riojas, the mother of Julie Michelle Bullard, asks the community and her daughter's alleged captors for help. (Photo: WRAL) "I have no indication we are keeping our investigation local," said Chief Deputy Kevin Bryant. While much is unknown about this case -- from Bullard's' whereabouts, to the suspect's description and whether he left the home by car or on foot -- family and friends said one thing is for certain: Michelle Bullard is a nice, loving person, and she has more friends than enemies. There was talk that a man who committed suicide in neighboring Harnett County may have something to do with Bullard's kidnapping. Investigators now tell WRAL News the suicide does not appear to be related to this case. http://www.wral.com/news/5840789/detail.html

LEE COUNTY, N.C. -- Investigators are expanding their search for a missing Lee County woman. On Thursday, authorities used cadaver dogs to search an area lake for signs of Julie Bullard. Lee County authorities said that more than a dozen people are searching a four-county area for clues to Bullard's whereabouts after an alleged home invasion and kidnapping early Monday morning. They also said that some people have been working 18-20 hour days in their quest to find Bullard. Officials said that there have been two new tips phoned into authorities after a public plea Wednesday by Bullard's mother. Both were of alleged sightings of Bullard in the area. However, authorities say that neither tip panned out. On Thursday, investigators went back to a pond near the home where a masked man allegedly abducted Bullard during a social gathering early Monday morning. The area around the pond had previously searched the area around the pond for clues. On Thursday, a boat and the cadaver dogs were used in the pond, and the water was dragged for evidence. Authorities say that the pond was re-searched to make sure that there was no evidence being overlooked by investigators. However, nothing was found during Thursday's search. Anyone with information relating to Bullard's disappearance is asked to contact local law enforcement agencies immediately. Lee County woman still missing after three days BROADWAY, N.C. A Lee County woman is still missing three days after a man with a gun broke into a home and robbed the people there. The family of Julie Michelle Bullard pleaded for her safe return yesterday. The 23-year-old woman was with her boyfriend, his roommate and another friend when the man broke into the house early Monday. The group said the gunman bound each person with tape and put them in separate rooms, then stole some cash and small valuables. When they freed themselves, they discovered Bullard was gone. Investigators are trying to establish whether Bullard's disappearance is in any way connected to a suicide in nearby Harnett County. They say a 49-year-old man killed himself Monday evening. Bullard's mother issued a public plea yesterday for help in the case, asking anyone with information to get in touch with the sheriff's department. ___ http://www.wwaytv3.com/Global/story.asp?S=4321175&nav=menu70_2

Special Dogs Start Search for Missing Woman Eyewitness News (01/07/06 - BROADWAY) - Search dogs from Virginia arrived in Lee County Saturday to help look for Michelle Bullard. The 22-year-old has not been seen since Monday, when she was reported missing after a violent home invasion. Authorities used cadaver dogs to search for Bullard along the Lee-Harnett county line. Officials say the dogs got a hit on a scent that took them into the woods off Bradley Road. The dogs are trained to pick up the faintest human scent, even days after someone has gone down a trail. Despite some hopeful moments, the dogs were not able to find any trace of Bullard. Saturday morning, Bullard's family handed out flyers in the parking lot of Broadway Elementary School. Authorities say right now they have no strong leads in Michelle's disappearance. http://abclocal.go.com/wtvd/story?section=triangle&id=3791486

Investigators Probe Links Between Missing Woman, Suicide Victim POSTED: 7:10 pm EST January 10, 2006 UPDATED: 8:04 pm EST January 10, 2006 LEE COUNTY, N.C. -- Detectives looking for a missing Lee County woman are not sure if a man's suicide is tied to the case, but they are not ruling out the possibility. Authorities believe that David Wilson took his own life a few hours after they say Michelle Bullard was allegedly kidnapped from a friend's home. "There are many rumors," said Harnett County Sheriff Larry Rollins. "There are many, as we say, 'He said, she said' statements. Investigators kept Wilson's truck, clothes and other belongings to further examine, but are not saying why. While it is unclear whether Wilson and Bullard knew each other, they may have both been in a local convenience store the night before her disappearance and his death. Investigators took surveillance video from a convenience store to examine whether it shows Wilson and Bullard inside the store. Bullard's family is not yet drawing conclusions, but Wilson's relatives are defending him. In 1975, at age 17, Wilson pleaded guilty to a homicide that occurred during a bar fight. In 1980, he escaped from prison in North Carolina and was later caught in Michigan. He was paroled in 1998 and parole ended in 2003. According to his sister, Diane Myatt, Wilson had turned his life around and she "prays he had nothing to do with (Bullard's disappearance)." Meanwhile, investigators continue to follow leads in Bullard's disappearance and plan to do more ground searches, if needed. Since Bullard's disappearance, investigators and volunteers from more than a dozen agencies have searched for a week in both Harnett and Lee counties. Detectives say they have answered very few question about the case. http://www.wral.com/news/5985334/detail.html?rss=ral&psp=news

A BLOG ENTRY: THE SEARCH CONTINUES- hoping for clues TUESDAY JANUARY 10 - (yesterday's update) PLACES LIKE THIS EXIST ALL AROUND BROADWAY The place above is tucked back into the woods, not visible from the road. There are many places such as this all around Broadway. This particular spot is near David Wilson's home. These are the type of places that need to be checked out. EVERYWHERE!!! Property owners need to walk their property. If you know of a place such as the one above, check it out. If you see something suspicious, DON'T TOUCH IT!!!! CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY AND WAIT. If you hunt or fish offer your boat, your ATV to aid in the search. Noting much has developed since Michelle was abducted. What we know is that Michelle Bullard is still missing. We know law enforcement has suspended the ground search. We know a dead man can't talk. But the dead man, David Wilson, 49 did talk just before he died. Among other things, Wilson told his brother that he had driven 400-500 miles the night and day Michelle disappeared. We know he told his brother that he spent the night in a parking lot of a grocery store in Spring Lake. We know that people on 2 week long crack binges do not just pull into a grocery store and fall asleep. What we don't know is why he said he was in Spring Lake. Was it to cover himself in case someone saw him town? Has he recently done work on a vacant rental house down there and had access to it? Could he have taken Michelle there with a pocket full of cash to purchase drugs and to party? Someone down there has seen him. Someone may have seen Michelle. WRAL The news media has made a mistake posing suspicion in the public's mind about a possible link between Bullard and Wilson because the two were spotted in the same convenience store. How many convenience stores are in Broadway? One. Wilson's wife had sent her husband to the store to get something for her. He left home and minutes later he is seen on the store's surveillance tapes purchasing that item. Michele was also in the store. Absolutely no relationship. No prearranged meeting, just chance. You will not be able to find a soul that will say that Michelle knew David Wilson. But you will be able find people that know that Wilson is capable of murder. The witnesses that were in the Sundown Lounge the night Wilson shot a man after he was thrown out, said he was coming back to kill Corney, came back and shot Corney just like he said he would. Wilson plead down from First Degree murder and that convicted Wilson in 1975 for killing Thomas Corney in cold blood. You might have been able to find another 12 people in Michigan for the vehicular manslaughter of his fellow escapee in 1980 when Wilson was on the run after he escaped from prison and was attempting to flee from police (just as he did the evening he shot himself) and crashed his car in a high speed chase killing the passenger. As I mentioned in a previous posting, had that chase and death happened in North Carolina, Wilson could have been charged with First Degree Murder for the death of his partner in crime. If a person, while in commission of a Felony causes the death of someone, that person can be tried for First Degree Murder. So in my book this dead piece of crap is a two time murderer. And if he is capable of one home invasion, one that I might add is extremely brazen and seems to have been triggered on the spur of the moment, then who says he hasn't done this 20 times before? What other unsolved home invasions are there in a 100 mile radius? What robberies, burglaries or rapes have been committed in the past couple of years since he has been off parole? And by the way, if you are wondering how a man like Wilson, sentenced to 40-60 years in prison, 13 infractions while in prison including escape, how a man like that could be out in half the time is beyond me. That is a question for one of the liberal public servants you've elected to make those decisions not me. Hopefully the $10,000 reward being offered will get a few tips for law enforcement to follow. Speaking of law enforcement, I know we have been critical at times, and I know we don't know a third of what they know about this case but both my brother and I were raised by two athletes. Our father was an All Star when played football for Duke, and our mother competed around the country showing horses. She rode one of the Champion Show Horses of all time, named DDT. They always said "You can do better." Neither of them knew the word quit. Encouragement to succeed came more from a disciplined theory of repetition "Do it over until you get it right." Sort of like an old-school coach like Vince Lombardi or my man Coach K, drills and exercises, repetition over and over, everything can be improved, never quit. Speaking of Coach K, I am such a big Duke fan, I am the type that yells at the television during a ballgame. Screaming at refs and players, just like most obnoxious Duke fan that i am. I've been known, on many occasions to even cuss my favorite players when I know they can do better. It doesn't mean I don't like them or I think someone else could have done better, it just means I am a fan, and as a fan sometimes I forget I am not on the bench. But cheers and jeers from the fans do motivate, think K'ville and the Cameron Crazies and how it creates a ten point advantage when they are at home. The Blue Line is all about being a fan of good police work, we cheer louder than anyone. But to be close enough to hear our cheers, you will also hear our jeers. Thanks to all those men and women in law enforcement that, with their dedication and determination, have served the community of Broadway proudly by working so hard to bring Michelle home. God bless each of you. We know you won't give up on Michelle or any other victim. If you didn't have the heart to do what you do, surely you would be doing something else, making more money, spending more time with your family and definitely not taking any more potshots from people in the peanut gallery. Thanks a lot, and be safe! http://www.bluelineradio.com/11006update.html

Kidnapper may have taken victim to her home By GORDON ANDERSON BROADWAY - Lee County sheriff's deputies have investigated the possibility that Julie Michelle Bullard's kidnapper took her back to her own residence before disappearing with her. A search warrant affidavit filed by Lee County sheriff's deputies shortly after Bullard's abduction states that a scent-tracking dog on loan from the Moore County Sheriff's Office led deputies from 6504 Bradley Road, where Bullard was abducted, to her home at 108 Burgess Circle in Broadway. The homes are approximately 2 miles apart. For that reason, deputies asked for a search warrant so they could go into her mobile home. But Chief Deputy Kevin Bryant of the Lee County Sheriff's Office said “nothing suspicious” was found inside. Efforts to reach Bullard's family to comment on the latest disovery were unsuccessful. Bullard, 23, was abducted just after 1 a.m. on Jan. 2. She was at the Bradley Road home of her boyfriend, Will Stence, when a masked gunman burst through the door and tied up the four people inside before taking them into separate rooms and robbing them. When the other three victims freed themselves, they found Bullard was gone. Since that time, deputies with the Lee County Sheriff's Office, the Harnett County Sheriff's Office and agents with the State Bureau of Investigation have been searching for Bullard. Bryant said that it was unclear if the kidnapper had actually taken Bullard to her home, although investigators had looked into that possibility. “It's hard to say,” he said. “A car isn't air-tight and we know that a person's scent can come out of a vehicle and attach to vegetation. Right now we don't have anything pointing us to (Bullard and her abductor returning to her home) other than the dogs leading us that way.” The possibility does raise questions in light of a new revelation that Bullard and 49-year-old David Wilson, who killed himself Jan. 2 when Harnett County sheriff's deputies pulled him over near his Cameron Road home, were seen inside The Pantry on Main Street in Broadway at the same time - around 10:30 p.m. - the night before Bullard's abduction. Investigators from Harnett County alerted Lee County authorities about Wilson's suicide, simply because it happened so close to where Bullard was kidnapped. Other than that, authorities in both Lee and Harnett counties have said that nothing they know of ties the two incidents together. While Bryant confirmed that Bullard and Wilson were seen in the same store at the same time, he specifically would not say they were together. “There's no information they were anywhere together,” he said. “In the same place at the same time - that's not the same as together.” In fact, there is no indication from anyone that Bullard and Wilson were even acquainted. “Until we can prove anything, we're considering this whole thing a coincidence,” Bryant said. Wilson does have a criminal history. According to the state Department of Corrections, Wilson pleaded guilty in 1975 to second-degree murder in Cumberland County. After a 1980 escape from a prison in Scotland County, he was caught in Michigan. Wilson was paroled in 1998 and the parole ended in 2003. In any case, authorities are still investigating any lead they receive in the case. To date, they've searched a pond behind the Bradley Road home three times, as well as a 5-acre patch of wooded land off Thomas Kelly Road just inside the Harnett County line. In most of the searches, various scent-detecting dogs were used. Bryant said that no more land searches are currently scheduled, although deputies wouldn't hesitate to do so. “If we get a lead that takes us to a certain piece of land, we'll go. It just depends on the information,” he said. Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the Lee County Sheriff's Office Tip Line at 718-4577. Callers can remain anonymous. http://www.sanfordherald.com/articles/2006/01/12/news/news06.txt

Tape shows no interaction with missing woman By Julia Oliver Staff writer Julie Michelle Bullard, 23, has been missing since Jan. 2. //David Earl Wilson, 49, committed suicide in his truck Jan. 2. BROADWAY — The man whose suicide Jan. 2 has drawn him into the mystery of a missing woman crossed paths with her at a convenience store hours before she vanished. Diane Walston, the manager of the Pantry store on Main Street, said a surveillance tape shows the two did not interact. She said David Earl Wilson, a regular customer at the store, came in a little after 10 p.m. Jan. 1 and bought paper towels. Julie Michelle Bullard, the missing woman, paid at the counter after he did, Walston said. The two did not come in together and they left separately, she said. “There was nothing suspicious going on in the parking lot,” she said. Authorities have said there is no connection between Bullard’s disappearance and Wilson’s suicide other than the timing and location of his death. He shot himself about six miles from the place she was last seen. Around the time she was at the Pantry, Bullard, 23, made her last call from her cell phone. She left a message on her friend Tara Gillum’s voicemail: “Oh my God, I’ve got some (expletive) to tell you.” Later that night, Bullard went to her boyfriend’s home outside Broadway. The three people she was with, including her boyfriend, told authorities that a masked man with a gun broke into the home about 1 a.m., bound them with tape, robbed them and put them in separate rooms. They told investigators that when they got free, Bullard was gone. Authorities have scoured the area around the home, using divers in a nearby pond and search dogs on the ground, and have not found her. Wilson’s family does not know where he was the night of Jan. 1. His wife reported him missing the next morning. About 5:40 p.m. Jan. 2, he called his brother, William Wilson, who met him on the side of a road in Harnett County. The two talked, and William Wilson said his brother seemed depressed. Around 7 p.m., as David Wilson followed his brother home, a sheriff’s deputy recognized his pickup from his missing person’s report. The deputy pulled behind him. David Wilson, 49, stopped on the side of the road and shot himself. His family says he was burdened by persistent medical and financial problems. His sister Diane Myatt said she believes the gun was in his truck because he was contemplating suicide. Wilson had served 23 years in prison for a 1975 murder and, as a convicted felon, was not permitted to carry a weapon. Myatt thinks one reason he shot himself when the deputy pulled behind him was because he did not want to go back to prison. She has said her brother had turned his life around since he was released in 1998. His discipline record while he was incarcerated is better than the average prisoner, a spokesman for the N.C. Department of Correction said Wednesday. During his last three years in prison, Wilson had no infractions, according to his record. Myatt also said that her brother said the shooting for which he was convicted was in self-defense, and the family had once considered asking for his case to be retried. Family members of the man Wilson shot in 1975, a Fayetteville bar owner named Thomas C. Corney, said hearing about the murder again after 30 years has been difficult. Corney’s son, Tom Corney Jr., who lives in Hope Mills, was 9 years old when his father was killed. “It brings back some very bad memories,” he said. He said his family is particularly troubled by the way Myatt characterized the shooting as self-defense. According to newspaper accounts from 1975, witnesses said David Wilson had been causing problems at the bar and was thrown out. He threatened to kill Corney, left, then came back with a gun, witnesses said. He shot Corney in the chest. Bobby Corney, an older brother of the bar owner, said he hoped David Wilson did turn his life around. But he believes Wilson’s family is unfairly characterizing his crime. “I’m sorry for Wilson’s family. I’m not sorry that he’s dead. I have to forgive him for what he did,” Bobby Corney said. “I want the record to be straight.” Staff writer Julia Oliver can be reached at oliverj@fayettevillenc.com or 323-4848, ext. 280. http://www.fayettevillenc.com/article?id=224144

Volunteers search for missing woman A staff report SANFORD — About 125 people scoured an area off U.S. 421 in Lee County on Saturday in search of a missing Broadway woman. The search yielded no immediate answers in the disappearance of Julie Michelle Bullard. Bullard, 23, was reported missing Jan. 2 after a man broke into a mobile home she was visiting on Bradley Road, just outside Broadway. She has not been seen since. The search began Saturday at 9 a.m., organizers said. Five teams of volunteers, some using horses, searched along roadways and woods. The volunteers alerted authorities to any possible clues they found. The mystery of Bullard’s disappearance was confounded by the suicide of David Earl Wilson, who shot himself about six miles from the last place Bullard was seen. Authorities say they have no connection between Wilson and Bullard’s disappearance other than the time and location of where he shot himself in his truck. He had gone missing after having what his family described as personal and financial problems. http://www.fayettevillenc.com/article?id=224438
