Katron Walker - Kidnapping/Murder 4 y.o. son- 10/01/07
Published: June 16, 2006 07:47 am Father accused of killing 4-year-old son expected in court today or Monday Staff report The Tribune-Star Katron Walker, preliminarily charged with murder in connection with the death of his 4-year-old son, Collin, will make his first court appearance today or Monday. The 33-year-old Terre Haute man remained hospitalized Thursday in the city after being arrested late Tuesday near Blackhawk, where he alleged killed his son and tried to kill his younger son, 2. Katron Walker suffered injuries to his neck and chest and was under guard by police until his release to custody. Terre Haute police Capt. Kevin Mayes said police learned Thursday that Katron Walker again would be kept overnight in the hospital. If he is not released from the hospital by 10 a.m. today, his initial court hearing will be Monday, said Sarah Mullican, chief deputy prosecutor. Katron Walker allegedly abducted his sons from his father-in-law’s back yard Tuesday morning, the same day the boys’ mother filed a protective order against her husband. The abduction resulted in an Amber Alert, and a tipster provided information late Tuesday that led police to a lake near Blackhawk. A bloodhound led police to an abandoned trailer. Katron Walker fled the trailer and ran to the lake holding one child and dragging the other, police said. Police managed to save 2-year-old Monte, but later found Collin’s body submerged in the lake. Collin died of a laceration to the heart, police said. Monte Walker, also hospitalized Thursday, is expected to recover from his injuries. Sincerest apologies for identification mistake A photograph on Page A1 of Thursday’s print edition of the Tribune-Star incorrectly identified a woman in the picture as Teresa Walker, mother of 4-year-old Collin Walker, who was killed late Tuesday. The boy’s father, Katron Walker, has been preliminarily charged in his son’s death. The photograph also appeared Wednesday evening and Thursday morning on the newspaper’s online edition. The front-page photograph had been graciously submitted to the Tribune-Star by a member of the Walker family on Wednesday. A newspaper staff member who was gathering information and photos for our Thursday edition inadvertently confused the identification of the individual in the picture. The woman pictured with Collin Walker on Thursday’s front page is Misty Sue Fears, an employee of Lowe’s in Terre Haute. The Walker family frequently attended family programs at Lowe’s, and the photo of Collin was taken with the employee during one of those family programs. As a service to our readers and to further correct the record, we are publishing elsewhere on this page today a photograph of Teresa Walker and her surviving son, Monte, who was seriously injured in the Tuesday incident. The Tribune-Star regrets the error and offers its sincerest apologies to the Walker family and friends, and to Misty Fears, for the misidentification. — Max Jones, editor http://www.tribstar.com/local/local_story_167074727.html

Father may face murder charge in death of son By Howard Greninger The Tribune-Star TERRE HAUTE — Police say they tried to pull 4-year-old Collin Walker from the deadly grip of his father as Katron Walker lunged into a murky lake with his bleeding son, but they couldn’t free him. Collin died Tuesday, not from drowning, but from a fatal stab wound to the heart, inflicted, police say, by his dad. Officers did wrestle 2-year-old Monte Walker away from his father, they say. The child is recovering at Riley Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis from stab wounds to his chest and neck. Walker allegedly abducted his sons that Tuesday morning at knifepoint from their grandfather’s home on Terre Haute’s eastside and ended up at the lake near Blackhawk in southeastern Vigo County. Walker, who turns 33 Friday, was preliminarily charged Wednesday with murder and attempted murder. He was treated at Union Hospital for a punctured lung, which may have been self-inflicted, said Bill Bergherm, assistant police chief of the Terre Haute Police Department. He remained at the hospital under guard last night. Walker could be released into police custody sometime today, said Vigo County Prosecutor Bob Wright. The father can be detained until Monday, while prosecutors determine final charges. During transport to the hospital Tuesday night, Walker repeatedly stated, “I killed my kids. God forgive me, I killed my kids,” according to Detective Jason Czupryn, who testified at a probable cause hearing Wednesday in Vigo County Superior Court Division 3. Walker tested positive for methamphetamine and marijuana, Bergherm said. Police had issued an Amber Alert on the Walker boys late Tuesday afternoon. Anita Smothers, who lives near the lake, told police she had seen Walker and his sons earlier in the day fishing, eating hot dogs, even taking a nap, but did not realize the child abduction alert had been issued until she saw a report about it on her father’s TV in a nearby mobile home. The family then called police. “All day I heard them say, ‘I love you, Dad,”’ Smothers told The Associated Press. About 9 p.m., officers converged on the lake near Blackhawk and found a van that Walker allegedly had stolen. Police had the area surrounded by about 9:20 p.m., Bergherm said. Four bloodhounds were brought in, and one dog led police near an abandoned trailer about a quarter-mile from where Smothers had seen the three. With police closing in, Walker fled the trailer holding one child in a headlock and dragging the second, Bergherm said. Both boys were naked. The father then ran about 30 feet to the lake, Bergherm said, as officers pursued. Police grabbed Monte and sprayed Mace at Walker in an attempt to free Collin, but the father jumped into the water with his 4-year-old, Bergherm said. “Katron Walker would not cooperate with officers. He made his way to the middle of the lake and was very, very uncooperative,” Bergherm said. “He then made his way back to the edge of the lake where officers had to enter the lake and remove him.” Smothers, who witnessed the rescue attempt, said she dove into the water to try to help the children and demanded to know where Walker had dropped Collin. “He’s grinning and he goes, ‘He’s probably at the bottom of the lake by now,”’ she told an AP reporter. Indiana State Police Sgt. Joe Watts said an ambulance was called to the lake for Monte at 11:33 p.m. He was taken to Riley hospital, where a spokesman said Wednesday he is “recovering nicely and is spending time with his family.” Bergherm said the children were injured before entering the water. “We have good reason to believe they were injured inside that trailer. The theory is, I think, he was trying to kill the children, be it in the water or from the wounds that they sustained,” he said. Because of murky water and little light, police were not able to immediately locate Collin. Indiana State Conservation divers searched less than an hour before finding the boy’s body, face down in 12 feet of water. “He had received an injury to his throat and a couple puncture wounds to his chest. He was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical personnel,” Bergherm said. An autopsy determined the 4-year-old died of a heart laceration, according to coroner Dr. Roland Kohr, in a statement read at the probable-cause hearing. Police found a steak knife believed to have been used in the assault in the abandoned trailer, Bergherm said. It had a 3- to 4-inch blade, he said. “The children’s clothing was in the trailer and there was blood in the trailer,” the assistant police chief said. The mother, Teresa C. Walker, told police she informed her husband Sunday that she planned to file for divorce and then took the children to a Council On Domestic Abuse shelter. On Tuesday, she was granted a protective order against her spouse in Vigo County Superior Court Division 4. A hearing for a permanent order was scheduled for July 26. That day, according to Bergherm, the mother took the boys to their grandfather’s house after a phone conversation in which Walker made “intimidating threats, including saying ‘I will be a star.’ “I have no idea if that meant he was going to kill his children or not,” Bergherm said. Police say Michael Dwyer, the boys’ grandfather, called at 10:15 a.m. Tuesday to report that Walker had taken the children from the Dwyer home on Indiana 46. Walker’s friend, Steve Conrad, had driven him to the home, police said, where Walker grabbed the boys from the back yard. They had been picking strawberries. Police say Walker then waved a knife at Conrad, forcing him from the van. Dwyer’s sister, Melanie Wright, tried to get the boys back. “She had ahold of Collin’s leg,” said Julie Wright, Melanie Wright’s daughter. “She was trying to get them out of the van, when pushed her down and kicked her twice in the chest. He was waving the knife, trying to slice her. She fought for the boys, and she got beat up pretty good.” Court records show Walker has one previous arrest, a felony charge of possession of methamphetamine in 2002. Under a plea agreement, he pleaded guilty to a class A misdemeanor possession charge and served five days in jail and 90 days of home detention. He was placed on probation for 355 days. In September 2003, a petition to revoke his probation was filed after Walker tested positive for marijuana in a drug screening. A court hearing in January this year placed him back on probation. June 16, 2006 Terre Haute man charged in son's killing TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- A man accused of fatally stabbing his 4-year-old son was formally charged with murder today, after police drove him to court from a hospital where he was being treated for knife wounds. Prosecutors also charged Katron Walker, 33, with attempted murder for allegedly trying to kill his 2-year-old son. A police cruiser took Walker close to the door of the courthouse after driving along a sidewalk. Walker was closely guarded as he was escorted the remaining 12 to 15 feet to the door and into Vigo County Superior Court 3. Police say Walker abducted his sons at knifepoint from the backyard of the boys' grandfather Tuesday morning. They issued an Amber Alert for the children later that day. Witnesses told police the father and sons spent several hours playing and fishing at a private, rural lake. That night, police officers found Walker's van near Dean's Lake, about 10 miles south of Terre Haute. As they scoured the area with search dogs, Walker ran from an abandoned trailer and jumped into the water, dragging his naked children with him, authorities said. Officers rescued 2-year-old Monte Walker. Divers later found the body of his 4-year-old brother, Collin, in 12 feet of water. An autopsy showed he was stabbed to death before he ended up in the water. Monte Walker, who also was stabbed and cut, was still recovering today at Riley Children's Hospital for Children in Indianapolis. Their father was treated for puncture wounds that police say were self-inflicted. Superior Court Judge David R. Bolk ordered that Walker be held in the county jail without bail. He asked Walker if he needed a public defender, but the Terre Haute man's response was inaudible. Bolk said he would appoint a public defender at a 10 a.m. Monday hearing. Collin Walker was the second Indiana child to die out of 22 Amber Alerts issued for children's disappearances since the state launched its system in 2002. In January 2005, the body of 10-year-old Katie Collman, of Crothersville, was found in a creek a few miles from Seymour five days after she had been abducted. Anthony Ray Stockelman was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for her death. http://www.indystar.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060616/LOCAL/606160538

Terre Haute Man Accused of Stabbing Sons in Court June 16, 2006 05:33 PM EDT The man accused of fatally stabbing his four-year-old son and attempting to murder his two-year-old son was in court for the first time Friday. Katron Walker, 33, entered and exited the Vigo County Courthouse with his head held low and without saying a word. Police and family members say he has a lot to answer for over the coming weeks. Family members watched from a distance, disgusted by the sight of Walker. "I started saying human being but I don't think he's human. I really don't think he's human," said Tom Terstegge, victim's Great-Grandfather. Police say on Tuesday morning Walker took his two boys from their grandparent's house at knife point. For the next 11 hours police searched for Walker. An AMBER Alert was issued. Then a tip came in, someone had seen Walker and the boys at a nearby lake. When officers arrived Walker ran into the water dragging the two boys with him. They had both been stabbed. Four year old Collin was dead, his two-year-old brother Monte was clinging to life. Both boys had slashed throats and stab wounds to their chests. Paramedics rushed Monte to Riley Hospital for Children where doctors stabilized him. The boy was released Friday afternoon. "He's been asking where his brother is at. He wants to know if they got him out of the water yet. Isn't that terrible?" said Terstegge. Walker spent the past three days in a Terre Haute hospital recovering, police say, from self inflicted stab wounds. He is now under careful watch. "I'm not certain on his health condition. The doctor did release him. I believe he will be placed on suicide watch," said Assistant Chief Bill Bergherm, Terre Haute Police Department. In court, a judge informed walker of the murder charges filed against him. Walker is being held without bond in the Vigo County Jail. Monte Walker has been released from the hospital, his brother's funeral is scheduled for Tuesday in Terre Haute. http://www.wishtv.com/global/story.asp?s=5041977

June 19, 2006 Terre Haute man faces execution in son's death TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Prosecutors filed a motion today seeking the death penalty against a Vigo County man accused of abducting and stabbing his two young sons, one of whom died. Katron Walker, 33, is charged with murder in the June 13 death of 4-year-old Collin Walker, who was found dead in a lake with a cut throat and puncture wounds to his chest. Vigo County Superior Court Judge David Bolk had been scheduled to appoint a public defender for Walker during a hearing this morning. But Indiana law requires that death penalty defendants be represented by two attorneys qualified in death penalty cases. Bolk will appoint those attorneys during a hearing next Monday. Walker, who is being held without bail, was charged with murder and attempted murder after last week's abduction of his sons, Collin and his 2-year-old brother, Monte. Police issued an Amber Alert after Walker grabbed his sons at knifepoint from their grandfather's backyard in Terre Haute the morning of June 13. That night, police found the van Walker had been driving near a private lake in Blackhawk in southwest Vigo County. While dogs were searching the area, Walker ran from a rundown, abandoned trailer and jumped into the water, dragging his naked children with him, police said. Officers jumped in after them and grabbed Monte Walker, but they could not find Collin in the murky, dark lake. A dive team later found his body in about 12 feet of water. Monte Walker was hospitalized with cuts on his neck and puncture wounds in his chest. Katron Walker, who had marijuana and methamphetamine in his system, was treated for wounds that police said were self-inflicted. Vigo County court records show he was convicted of methamphetamine possession in early 2003 and sentenced to probation. http://www.indystar.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060619/LOCAL/606190450

Published: June 26, 2006 11:23 pm Father of slain child appears in court with defense attorneys By Karin Grunden The Tribune-Star A Terre Haute man charged with the murder and attempted murder of his sons returned to court Monday, making his first appearance with his defense attorneys. Katron Walker, 33, was led into Vigo County Superior Court Division 3 wearing a bulletproof vest — a precautionary measure used in high-profile cases, one law enforcement official said. Prosecutors announced last week they plan to seek the death penalty against Walker, marking the first such case originating in Vigo County since 1987. Walker is accused of fatally stabbing his 4-year-old son, Collin, and injuring his 2-year-old son, Monte, late on June 13 near Blackhawk as police responded to an Amber Alert tip providing information about the boys’ whereabouts. During Monday’s hearing, Walker’s defense attorney Jessie Cook said she was not yet prepared for a trial date to be set. At Cook’s request, Judge David Bolk scheduled a pretrial conference for Aug. 1. Cook, a longtime attorney who has had experience with 10 death-penalty cases, has been appointed to represent Walker. She is being assisted by Terre Haute attorney Joe Etling. Court records show Etling has not yet completed the required hours of training for defense of death-penalty cases, but is scheduled to do so in September. The Indiana Supreme Court approved a temporary waiver, pending Etling’s completion of a two-day seminar. He will serve as co-counsel in the case. Chief Deputy Prosecutor Sarah Mullican, who was in court Monday representing the prosecution, said she had filed a motion asking for hair, blood and saliva samples from Walker. According to the motion, they are to be used for comparison to evidence gathered by police during their investigation of the crime. Bolk did not immediately rule on the motion. At the conclusion of Monday’s hearing, Walker ignored reporters questions as he was escorted to the Vigo County Jail. He was expected to be transferred back to the Wabash Valley Correctional Facility in Carlisle, where he will be detained pending trial. Vigo County Sheriff Jon Marvel said the state prison provides a 24-hour suicide watch and other protection that his staffing levels cannot currently provide. Defense seeks fall 2007 trial for Katron Walker Case marks first death penalty proceedings in Vigo County since 1987 By Deb McKee The Tribune-Star TERRE HAUTE — Defense attorneys for a Vigo County man accused of murder say they would like the trial to be set for late fall 2007, but they will have to wait at least six more weeks to learn the date. Katron Walker, 33, appeared in Vigo County Superior Court, Division 3 on Tuesday for a pre-trial conference, along with his public defenders Jessie Cook and Joseph Etling. Walker is accused of fatally stabbing his 4-year-old son, Collin, and injuring his 2-year-old son, Monte, on June 13 near Blackhawk as police responded to an Amber Alert tip providing information about the boys’ whereabouts. In June, prosecutors announced plans to seek the death penalty against Walker, marking the first such case originating in Vigo County since 1987. Deputy Prosecutor Sarah Mullican on Tuesday asked Judge David Bolk to set a trial date. Defense attorneys said it would be unrealistic to determine a date for the trial so soon. Cook said the team needs to decide whether they intend to file a motion for a change of venue. Cook, speaking to the Tribune-Star by phone, said capital cases can take “years to litigate. This one is just moving along,” she added. She said a mental health evaluation is expected to take months. Judge Bolk set another pretrial conference for Oct. 31. Cook said, “If we file a motion for change of venue, we will have it filed by then.” Walker was expected to be transferred back to the Wabash Valley Correctional Facility in Carlisle, where he has been detained pending trial. Katron Walker, 33, could get the death penalty, if convicted. Judge David Bolk set the date Tuesday in Vigo County Superior Court Division 3 as Walker appeared for a pre-trial conference with his public defenders, Jessie Cook and Joseph Etling. Walker is accused of fatally stabbing son Collin, and injuring his 2-year-old son, Monte, on June 13 near Blackhawk as police responded to an Amber Alert tip providing information about the boys’ whereabouts. In June, prosecutors announced plans to seek the death penalty against Walker, the first capital case originating in Vigo County since 1987. Chief Deputy Prosecutor Sarah Mullican on Tuesday asked Bolk to set a trial date. Cook told the judge that “barring unforeseen publicity,” the defense would not file a request for a change of venue for a trial outside of Vigo County. Cook said the defense has not received evaluations or reports from mental health experts and is waiting other materials. Bolk questioned prosecutors and the defense about the duration of the trial. Cook said a “minimum of four weeks,” and Mullican agreed. Bolk scheduled the next pre-trial conference for 8:30 a.m. on Jan. 16. http://www.tribstar.com/news/local_story_304233503.html
