Body of missing Livermore girl found in San Joaquin County By John Simerman Knight Ridder Newspapers A body found Jan. 10 in a San Joaquin County irrigation canal was identified Saturday as Kayla Reed, the 15-year-old Livermore girl who went missing seven weeks ago, police Chief Steve Krull said. Her death is being investigated as a homicide. Reed's decomposed body was identified through a photo of her teeth and a torso X-ray that showed an anomaly on one of her ribs. A DNA test also will be done, Krull said. No obvious cause of death could be found. Krull said there was ``nothing to suggest'' a suicide. An autopsy determined that she had been dead three to five weeks, indicating she was killed shortly after she went missing Dec. 3, said San Joaquin County sheriff's Sgt. Joe Herrera. ``It was consistent with the time she disappeared,'' he said. Krull said a person reported the body floating near a siphon point southeast of Tracy in the 120-mile-long Delta-Mendota Canal. The canal runs north-south along western San Joaquin County as part of the Central Valley Project water network. Herrera said two or three bodies turn up in the canal and other local waterways each year. ``The canal will carry people,'' said Krull. ``We know where she was found, but that may not have been where she was placed.'' He declined to say whether there was evidence of sexual assault, what clothes remained on her body, or whether police found any evidence along the canal bank. Kayla, a Livermore High School freshman, was last seen at home by her mother about 12:30 a.m. Dec. 3. Her mother first reported her two days later as a runaway. As days passed and Kayla failed to contact friends or family, police began to investigate her disappearance as a missing persons case. Police have been investigating a possible connection between her disappearance, and now her death, and a personal page that Kayla had created on the popular social Web site myspace.com. Police have no specific suspects, said Krull. The murder investigation is being conducted jointly by the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Department and Livermore police. They ask anyone who may have information on her disappearance or death to contact San Joaquin Sheriff's dispatch at (209) 468-4400, or Livermore police at (925) 371-4900. http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews/news/breaking_news/13682050.htm

Friends, family remember Livermore's Kayla Reed Service recalls laughter and loves of a teenager; police probe progressing By Simon Read, STAFF WRITER LIVERMORE — Friends and family gathered Thursday night to remember Kayla Reed, the Livermore teenager found dead last month in a San Joaquin County canal. Candles, stuffed animals and pictures of Kayla, 15, decorated the chapel at Wilson Family Funeral Parlor as more than 100 people filed in to remember the young girl who was reported missing in December. Angel Sheets, Kayla's mother, wept as she told those in attendance of Kayla's sense of humor and her daughter's love of cats. "She used to tell me, 'Mom, when I get my own place, I'm going to have 50 cats. And if my place isn't big enough, I'll get a bigger house,'" Sheets said. Students from Livermore High School — which Kayla attended as a freshman — filled the audience and wept as Sheets spoke. "I love my baby girl," Sheets said. "She was a blessing. Her smile would light up the sky. She was so beautiful, and she touched so many people. She was special." Fighting to maintain her composure, Sheets vowed she would be with her daughter again. "Mommy loves you so much," she said. "She is in my heart, and she is in my soul. Some day baby I'll be with you, as God as my witness." Pastor Jarrett Patero read a statement from Kayla's aunt, Sandi Sheets. "Kayla was a child about to blossom into a woman," the statement said. "She would laugh at the simplest things like tea parties with stuffed animals. Every activity made her life sparkle ... She should be with her girlfriends, laughing about some cute guy." Detectives from the Livermore Police Department attended the memorial service. The investigation into Kayla's death is moving along, Sgt. Jim Conley said. "We're out there, serving warrants and really working it," he said. Authorities found Kayla's body Jan. 10 floating in the Delta-Mendota Canal near Vernalis in San Joaquin County. The badly decomposed body was identified through dental charts and an X-ray examination, and investigators believe foul play was involved. An official cause of death is still some weeks away, pending the completion of toxicology tests, according to the San Joaquin County Coroner's Office. Kayla disappeared from her home sometime after 12:30 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 3, and was reported missing two days later. Police said they found no evidence of a break-in or that she left the house against her will. At the conclusion of Thursday's service, Sheets urged all parents to take time out to be with their children. "Hug your kids," she said. http://www.insidebayarea.com/dailyreview/localnews/ci_3471920
