MOBILE, Ala.- --
South Alabama student Sonia Savani knows better than two walk alone at night.
"Try not to walk any where at night by myself on this campus or any other campus," shared Savani.
Alabama law makers are trying to take one worry out of the equation...keeping convicted sex offenders from living on or near college campuses.
Lawmakers say the philosophy behind the bill is to keep kids safe on campus.
Representative Jamie Ison is behind the bill one hundred percent.
"Women - especially freshman away from home for the first time are at a vulnerable age. This is about ensuring their safety," said Rep. Ison.
She says that type of protection calls for keeping sex offenders from living within 2 thousand feet of a college or university campus. The same rules that apply to any other school.
Representative Ison adds - Alabama is the only state addressing the issue... and that's something Sonia Savani is thankful for. "Definitely think it is a good idea. Especially with our campus being as open as it is now."
As it stands there are no convicted sex offenders living within 2 thousand feet of USA. Representative Ison says she wants to keep it that way...and so does Sonia.
The bill has passed the House of Representatives - now it just needs the Senate's approval.
