Charges filed in two-year-old investigation, Jack Kuenzie reports
COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - West Columbia Police have charged a man in connection with a two year old murder investigation.
Kenneth Andrew Lynch, 48, has been charged with two counts of murder in the case involving his live-in girlfriend, Portia Washington, and her grandchild, Cassandra Livingston.
Washington and her granddaughter went missing from West Columbia's Park Place Apartments in June of 2006.
The family members have wanted answers since then.
"I'm real nervous today," Sallie Jones, Washington's mother said. "You can't imagine where I'm going--my only child gone."
Investigators in the case say the motivation to get Lynch convicted was the reason why they took two years to charge him.
"We don't have to just charge him, we have to convict him," Maj. Jackie Brothers said.
In August of 2006, Kenneth Lynch was arrested in Washington state. Police say he was trying to cross into Canada. They say Lynch was driving Portia Washington's car.
Police say they have held him since then on a grand larceny charge for the theft of that car.
Police continued to look for Washington and her granddaughter, but have come up empty-handed. Officials believe the two were murdered.
In May, West Columbia police told WIS the longer they go without finding the missing two, the better case police have against Lynch.
West Columbia Chief Dennis Tyndall issued a statement saying it is time for Lynch to be held accountable.
The statement also made no mention of a breakthrough in the case that led to the charges being filed, but officials say Lynch was on the move immediately after the two disappeared.
Investigators are confident in the evidence they have gathered for the case; they add that plenty of evidence has appeared in the last year alone and that it will be enough to prove Lynch guilty of a double-murder.
"We have evidence that we believe proves that he's responsible for their disappearance and their death," Brothers said.
Lynch's cooperation with the case has been none according to Brothers.
"Mr. Lynch has never spoken with us, he still has not spoken with us, and we don't know where those bodies are," Brothers said.
Officials say Lynch showed up in hotels in Mississippi and Arizona and even got a speeding ticket in Texas. They also believe Lynch may have tried to get into Mexico at some point.
Lynch is expected to have a bond hearing on the murders next week.
