SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (AP) - A convicted sex offender who molested an 11-year-old boy and sexually assaulted a 3-year-old is set to be released in Santa Barbara County after a decade in a state mental hospital.
The Sheriff's Department posted a notice Monday on its Web site about the pending release of 45-year-old Kenneth Rasmuson following an appellate court ruling.
State officials have not yet disclosed the community to which Rasmuson, who used to reside in the county, will be released.
In 1981, Rasmuson was convicted of sexually assaulting an 11-year-old boy, and spent 3 1/2 years at Atascadero State Hospital as a mentally disordered sex offender.
After his release, he was convicted in 1987 of kidnapping and sexually assaulting a 3-year-old. He was sentenced to 17 years in prison but was granted parole in 1996 and transferred back to the hospital under the Sexually Violent Predator Act.
