FBI fails to match mystery bones with missing Fargo man Associated Press FARGO, N.D. - Human bones found in a field west of here more than a year ago are not those of a man missing for 35 years, authorities say. Cass County Sheriff's Capt. Rick Majerus said the FBI Laboratory in Quantico, Va., did not match the bones with DNA samples taken from a relative of Kenneth Tank, a Fargo man who disappeared in 1971. "It's still a mystery," Majerus said of the bones. "We have no clue who this guy is." A piece of skull was found last November 2004 and a pelvic bone was found in April 2005, by a landowner who farms near Ayr, in western Cass County, Majerus said. The bones were sent to the FBI last year; the results of the DNA tests were released last week, Majerus said. Cass County authorities also have asked for public help in identifying the bones, with no luck, Majerus said. "We really don't have a lot to go on," he said. North Dakota State University anthropologist Charles Musiba has said he believes the bones had been in the field for at least 35 years. He said the bones appear to belong to a white man who was between 35 years old and 45 years old at the time of death. Majerus said Tank was the only missing person matching that description. Authorities said the only large-scale event held at the site in recent years was a national plowing contest in September 1964. Among the dignitaries who attended the event were the late Sen. Barry Goldwater, a Republican presidential candidate that year, and the late Minnesota Sen. Hubert Humphrey. Authorities have not found out whether anyone who attended the event was reported missing. Majerus said the DNA results from the bones will be archived by the FBI.
