On December 29th 1999, Ashley Freeman celebrated her 16th birthday at her mobile home in Vinita, Oklahoma with her friend Lauria Bible and her boyfriend, Jeremy Hurst. Jeremy left around 9:30pm. Lauria spent the night. Around 5:30am, someone noticed flames at the mobile home and called police. When they arrived the Freeman mobile home was completely burnt. Authorities found the body of Ashley's mother, Kathy Freeman with a gunshot wound to the head. This led them to speculate that Kathy's husband, Danny Freeman, had killed her and abducted both girls. The next day, however, Lauria Bible's mother Lorene, searched the burnt home and discovered the body of Danny Freeman. How could the authorities have missed this? Dwayne Vancil, Danny's brother, believes that the Sheriff's department contracted out the killing, and abducted the girls to make the murders look like something they were not. For months, it had been rumored in Vinita that the Craig County Sheriff's Department had been feuding with the Freemans. It began when Danny's son, Shane, was shot and killed by a deputy after he had stolen a truck and a neighbor's gun. Although Shane's killing was ruled justifiable, the Freeman's threatened to file a wrongful death lawsuit against the Sheriff's Department. According to some, the Freeman's accusations provoked deputies to intimidate the family. But the sheriff's department has denied any involvement in the incident. Others wonder if Danny was killed over drugs and the girls were abducted by the murderers. A $50,000 reward has turned up few leads. Suspect allegedly admits to Oklahoma killings Jun 1st, 2005, \ -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Craig County, Okla., Sheriff Jimmy Sooter said Tuesday the suspected serial killer being held on a capital murder charge in Mobile County has confessed to killing four Oklahoma people in December 1999. The sheriff said Mobile county deputy Cpl. Paul Burch called him Tuesday morning, saying that Jeremy Bryan Jones -- who already faces murder charges in three states -- had confessed to slaying an Oklahoma couple, their 16-year-old daughter and her friend. Sooter told reporters in Oklahoma that Jones said he killed the parents of one of the girls and set their mobile home on fire. He said he then posed as the girls' rescuer but later killed them and dumped their bodies in a Kansas trash pit. Jones provided details of the crimes that only the killer would know, the sheriff said. Jones' Mobile attorney, Habib Yazdi, said Tuesday evening that his client said he is making these confessions to confuse the jury when he goes on trial for capital murder in the September 2004 death of Lisa Nichols in north Mobile County. In December 1999, the bodies of Danny Freeman and his wife, Kathy Freeman, were found in their burned mobile home in the rural town of Welch. Their daughter, Ashley Freeman, and her friend, Lauria Bible, both 16, have not been seen since the night that the Freemans died from shotgun blasts. Lauria Bible was at the Freemans to spend the night with her friend on her friend's birthday. Sooter said Jones told him that he was high on methamphetamine when he went to the Freeman home to confront Danny Freeman about some money he allegedly owed to one of Jones' friends. Jones had only briefly met Danny Freeman before, Sooter said in Oklahoma. "After he found the Freemans' trailer he killed them," Sooter said. "He then took the girls to a place he was familiar with and shot them in the head. He then dumped them in a hole in the ground, probably a mine shaft of some kind." Jones didn't say if he molested the girls sexually before killing them, Sooter said. http://www.al.com/news/mobileregister/index.ssf?/base/news/1117617557269360.xml&coll=3
