HALIFAX - A Roanoke Rapids man was found guilty of kidnapping and assault by a Halifax County jury late Friday, according to Assistant District Attorney Melissa Pelfrey.
Herbert Warren, 21, was sentenced to 2.8 to 4.1 years in prison after a jury found him guilty around 7 p.m., Pelfrey said Monday.
Warren was charged with second-degree kidnapping and assault by pointing a gun during a domestic dispute that occurred on March 22. A jury was picked Wednesday.
The incident, the culmination of continued domestic problems between Warren and the victim, started in Nash County and ended in Roanoke Rapids. He has a pending domestic charge in Halifax County District Court, Pelfrey said.
Pelfrey said Warren was also suspected of setting fire to a house at 210 Monroe St. five days after he was charged in the domestic. The fire appeared to have started on the front porch and crept into the front living room, where it spread and destroyed the interior of the house. Although the house was occupied, there was no power to the dwelling.
The owner of the house moved to Florida and prosecution was not pursued.
Pelfrey said she was pleased with the outcome of the case. “The jury listened to the evidence and followed the law. This case shows the law does protect domestic violence victims in the county.”
Warren was known to carry weapons and he was a danger to the citizens, Pelfrey said. “This was a huge step for the citizens of Halifax County for their safety.”
