Man's Best Friend Becomes a Life-Saver
Poor little Ozzie, I hope he will be OK!! Oct 23, 2006 10:26 pm US/Eastern Man's Best Friend Becomes Life-Saver Dick Standish Reporting (CBS 3) GLENOLDEN, N.J. Man's best friend may have been a life-saver for a Delaware county man and now he is hoping he can return the favor. As CBS 3's Dick Standish reports, he's trying to help his beloved pet survive the hit and run crash that could have killed both of them. Dave Tillman and Ozzie, his Airedale Terrier, were out for their nightly walk on Chester Pike in Glenolden on Friday when a car came from behind them and hit them both. "The next thing I know, I was over on the hill holding my dog, who was yelling and crying," said Tillman, adding, "He hit my legs and knocked me out of the way." They had been on the sidewalk and before they were hit, the car smashed a sign. "A big yellow sign it said, I believe, 'Do Not Tailgate,'" explained Tillman. A small black car slowed and then sped away. "If the guy who hit him would just sit in the car and hear this dog cry," said Tillman. Ozzie was in pain all the way to the veterinarian in Malvern on Monday morning. "They said it was about 4-thousand bucks, I'm a regular Joe living paycheck to paycheck," explained Tillman. However, if Ozzie can be saved, he will find a way to pay. "We got a thing on our mortgage, on our credit card, we just have to pay it," explained Tillman. The vet is operating. "There's a joint ball in a socket, it keeps popping out again," said Tillman. The hope is that the left hip can be fixed enough so Ozzie will be able to get around. A fragment of the shattered headlight was removed from Ozzie's head by the vet. Tillman has given it to the Glenolden police who hope they can trace it to the car that hit and fled. Awwwwwwwwwwwww what a sweet little boy! Oct 27, 2006 5:47 pm US/Eastern Boy Donates Piggybank Funds To Hero Dog, Ozzie Mary Stoker Smith Reporting (CBS 3) A man was walking his dog when a car struck them both and sped off. The incident happened last Friday. Now, one ten year-old boy says he's going to do everything he can to help out. Brian Petherbridge says he's excited to met Ozzie and his owner. Last week Dave Tillman was walking his dog Ozzie when a driver hit a sign and then struck the owner and his dog. Dave walked away with minor injuries, but Ozzie wasn't as lucky. He had damage to both his legs and could barely walk. Since the accident Ozzie has been at the Old Marple Veterinary Hospital in Malvern. Brian knows that the stay at the vet is costly so to help out the fourth grader donated everything in his piggy bank, $14.90 to the dog's care. Brian said that his dad helped out. "He matched whatever I had," said Brian. The generous donation has gone towards getting Ozzie back on his feet. Ozzie has made quite a recovery. But Ozzie's spirit was really lifted when his owner Dave's wife came to visit him. Ozzie is expected to make a full recovery and he'll need his energy when he meets Brian who has this message for him: "You put your own life on line for him," said Brian. Ozzie is expected to return home this weekend. Police are hoping that a piece of headlight found in Ozzie's fur will provide them with clues to the driver who caused the accident. http://cbs3.com/local/local_story_300175313.html

Ozzie, the hero dog, finally returned to his Glenolden home Saturday after fully recuperating from two operations. Ozzie is credited with savings his owner's life by taking the brunt of the blow from a dangerous hit-and-run accident. The good news is that doctors said Ozzie will fully recover. Ozzie almost didn't survive, but CBS 3 viewers were captivated by the story and opened their hearts and wallets to help Ozzie return to his loving family. The headlight of the hit-and-run vehicle hit Ozzie in the face, his ankle was worn to the bone, he suffered a bruised heart and his hip was torn out of the socket. "He saved my life. If that aint a hero I don't know what is," said Ozzie's owner, David Tillman. Tillman and his family are overwhelmed by the support they received after asking the media to help them identify the hit-and-run driver. "Our whole intention was to find one bad apple, and what we did was find a whole orchard full of good ones. For everyone that wrote a note, I want to thank you. Everyone that contributed, I want to thank you, and most importantly everyone that prayed for him, I want to thank you," said Tillman. Ozzie's medical bills were covered in full by donations. Police are still looking for the hit-and-run driver, and they are asking anyone with information to contact them. http://cbs3.com/topstories/local_story_301203558.html
