Details of Disappearance
Mendez was last seen playing on the banks of the Tuolumne River near his family's residence in the 2800 block of Shiloh Road in Modesto, California on December 22, 1996. He has never been seen again. His mother came home at 5:30 p.m. and he was not there. She called the police when he had not gotten home by 7:00 p.m.
Investigators believe Mendez may have drowned in the river, which was swollen with rain at the time of his disappearance. Authorities found a life jacket, a toy gun which belonged to Mendez, and pieces of the peel from an orange which they believe he ate for lunch on the riverbank. There was no sign of Mendez or his remains in the water, however, so it is possible that he was abducted from the area. His case remains unsolved.
