New Leads On 28 Year-Old Sumter Cold Case
Updated: 5/24/2006
(Sumter County) From a distance, none of the grave markers look all that different from the others. But there is one for which the story hasn't been finished, a tombstone that marks a memory ... but not a body.
He is Maxwell Allen Graham, known as Mac or Maxie by his friends and family. He was 26 years old when he went missing from his Pinewood home on August 24th, 1978. After a while, his family put up stone marker in a graveyard. But Maxie's niece Jennifer Russell knows the only real solution for her family is the truth.
“I've heard stories about it from different people and from my family over the years, wondering what happened,” said Jennifer, who was eight years old when her uncle disappeared. “To know what happened to him would set ease at all of their hearts, and their minds,” she said talking about her family.
Major Larry Florence of the Sumter County Sheriff's Department believes they could soon have an answer. Since adding Graham's picture to the county's cold case web site, Florence says they've received several legitimate tips.
“It's actually jogged some memories of things that happened back during that time, and these folks are actually coming forward with some bits and pieces,” said Major Florence.
He says there is reason to hope, after all this time, that Graham's loved ones might soon have closure.
“If the leads come in, I would say this case is a solvable case,” said Major Florence.
Jennifer and her family just want to believe they'll be able to visit more than a stone marker. They want to stand beside their Maxie.
