Missing Children Success Stories - April 2008
Missing Children Success Stories - April 2008 Anonymous Tip to America's Most Wanted Leads to Recovery A father contacted NCMEC’s Call Center on October 22, 2007 for help recovering his three-year-old daughter. The child’s mother had abducted the child a year prior to his call. There was no formal custody agreement between the parents of the child, and when the father obtained temporary custody, the mother told him she was not willing to allow him to see the child or to give custody to him. After the child’s father supplied the needed custodial documentation, and a photograph of the child, a poster was created featuring the child. The poster was put on NCMEC’s website at www.missingkids.com and distributed through various outlets. A detective from the Hammond Police Department in Hammond, IN worked closely with NCMEC to follow up on leads received by NCMEC’s Call Center over the next four months. A break in the case came when an America’s Most Wanted operator took a lead from an anonymous caller indicating the child’s location. The lead information was passed on to the child’s case manager and law enforcement, resulting in the recovery of the child on March 10, 2008. Non-Custodial Mother Abducts 15-year-old Child An officer with the Rio Rancho Police Department in Rio Rancho, NM contacted NCMEC’s Call Center on February 19, 2008 to report a missing 15-year-old girl. It was reported that the child, who became missing from her foster home, may have entered a vehicle on a nearby street. Law enforcement informed NCMEC that the child had the mental capacity of a five- or six-year-old, so the child's case was handled with critical attention. After the child’s social worker supplied the needed documentation and photographs, a poster was created featuring the child. The poster was put on NCMEC’s website at www.missingkids.com and it was distributed through NCMEC’s National Photo Distribution program, including Wal-Mart bulletin boards, during the months of February and March 2008 in the areas where the child was thought to be. NCMEC continued to work with law enforcement to distribute posters and take leads through NCMEC’s Call Center. A breakthrough on the case came on March 12, 2008 when the NCMEC case manager obtained an address for the child through leads via the Call Center, which had been generated as a direct result of the child’s poster being featured on Wal-Mart’s bulletin boards. It was discovered that the child had been abducted by her non-custodial mother. Law enforcement in New Mexico safely recovered the child from the hotel in which the mother and child were staying. The non-custodial mother was placed under arrest. Child Recovered After Four Years Due to Website On September 23, 2003 a law enforcement officer contacted NCMEC’s Call Center and reported a 14-year-old girl missing. It was reported that the child, along with a friend, left a retreat program located in Indianapolis, IN. A NCMEC poster was created with a photograph of the child and distributed through NCMEC’s National Photo Distribution program and placed on NCMEC’s website, www.missingkids.com. After being missing for four years, the child was recovered when a coworker of the child’s social worker saw the child’s poster on NCMEC’s website. The child, who had been a client of the coworker, was using an alias name. After confronting the child, she obtained a copy of her birth certificate, proving that she was in fact the missing child.
