More On Shasta & Dylan Groene
Documents: Duncan took pictures of children, shot Dylan Groene 05:51 PM PDT on Friday, October 21, 2005 Duncan, according to the documents, confessed to Shasta Groene while she was in captivity that he had entered her family’s home through an unlocked door in the back of the house. When investigators arrived at the crime scene on May 17th, they found Brenda Groene and her son Slade lying in the kitchen. Slade had his hands duct taped behind his back while Brenda’s hands were both duct taped and zip-tied behind her back. Mark McKenzie was found a short distance away in the living room and investigators initially thought that due to the nature of the wounds to their heads and the amount of blood around their bodies that all three had died from gunshot wounds to the head. Through the course of the investigation detectives determined that despite a number of weapons found inside the home the three had been killed by blunt force trauma to the head. Duncan transported the two children from the home in a truck using a spare key belonging to Mark McKenzie. Investigators later found a roll of duct tape in the truck. While Shasta and Dylan were in captivity Duncan showed Shasta a map of where they were staying and Shasta later told investigators that she thought, based on the map Duncan showed her, that they were somewhere in Montana. Shasta also told investigators that Duncan took pictures of her, Dylan and Duncan using a digital camera. A search warrant confirmed that a laptop computer, digital camera, video camera and a power adapter that would allow Duncan to recharge electronic equipment using his vehicle’s cigarette lighter were found when they searched the Jeep Cherokee he was driving. According to interviews with Shasta, Duncan - who maintained several Blogs on the Internet - also wrote notes on the walls of his Fargo, North Dakota apartment but its unclear as to what the subjects of those notes were. During the course of the investigation, an interview with Shasta Groene revealed that her older brother Dylan had been shot but information was redacted as to his cause of death. Joseph Duncan, who is currently in custody at the Kootenai County Jail, has been charged with the murders of Brenda Groene, her son Slade and Brenda’s boyfriend Mark McKenzie. He is also charged with the abduction of two young children – Dylan and Shasta Groene – from the family home in Wolf Lodge Bay east of Coeur d’Alene. Shasta was rescued at a Coeur d’Alene Denny’s restaurant on July 2nd, where she was found with Joseph Duncan. Human remains were later found at a remote campsite Duncan stayed at with the children near St. Regis, Montana and identified as nine-year-old Dylan Groene. Duncan is facing the death penalty if convicted. He has also confessed to the murder of Anthony Martinez, a boy from Beaumont, California who was abducted in 1997 and whose body was found following one of the biggest manhunts in that area’s history. Forensic evidence, including a fingerprint, also has linked Duncan to Martinez’s murder. http://www.nwcn.com/sharedcontent/registration/register.jsp?fw=http://www.nwcn.com/topstories/stories/krem2_102105_duncan-documents.118145e8f.html
