Virginia Tech Student Morgan Dana Harrington Disappears From Concert Police Say 20-Year-Old Vanished, Leaving Behind ID and Cell Phone By RUSSELL GOLDMAN Oct. 20, 2009 Morgan Dana Harrington ought to have arrived at her parents' Roanoke, Va., home Sunday afternoon, as she did most weekends, but when the 20-year-old Virginia Tech student did not show up, her parents quickly knew something was wrong. Morgan Harrington was last seen at a Metallica concert in Virginia with friends.Harrington, an education major, was last seen Saturday night. She mysteriously disappeared when she became separated from two friends at a Metallica concert at the University of Virginia. Police found her purse, with her ID and cell phone, in the parking lot of the University of Virginia's John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville -- but there was no trace of the young woman. Her father, Dr. Dan Harrington, said Morgan was a "homebody" who regularly visited her parents in Roanoke, 35 miles from the Virginia Tech campus in Blacksburg. He said she dropped in "midweek and most weekends." Harrington called her parents to say she arrived safely at the concert Saturday afternoon. She planned to come home again Sunday to study for an upcoming exam with her father, a physician and medical school dean. To not show up and to not call, Dan Harrington said, was "very atypical. We were in touch with her every day. She would not have just run away." Police Monday searched the area near the arena using a helicopter and sniffer dogs. Authorities are, for now, continuing to treat the disappearance as a missing person case, but say they have few leads. "We have no evidence that a crime has been committed," said Lt. Joe Rader of the Virginia State Police during a press conference Monday. "It's unusual that we haven't heard anything from her friends or family regarding her whereabouts. That's the biggest concern currently: her whereabouts and her welfare," said Rader. Dan Harrington described his daughter as a "really great kid. She loved music and occasionally went to large concerts. She was an artist and liked to read." He also described her as a "forward-looking person" who planned to choose her classes for the spring semester this weekend, and already purchased a Halloween costume with her mother. http://abcnews.go.com/US/virginia-tech-student-morgan-dana-harrington-disappears-concert/story?id=8872201 Into Thin Air: Virginia Tech Student Disappears Harrington, said her father, did not have a boyfriend. "If Morgan is out there and hears us -- please come home. And if someone has Morgan, please let her go and come home safely," her father said at a press conference Monday. "We miss our little baby. She is our precious daughter," said her mother, Gil Harrington. Harrington was last seen wearing a black T-shirt with "Pantera" written on the front in tan letters, a black miniskirt, black tights and knee-high black boots. A Facebook group "Help Find Morgan Dana Harrington" has been set up in the hope of collecting information. Over 800 people have joined the group, but most have contributed only their support and prayers. None say they have information as to her whereabouts http://abcnews.go.com/US/virginia-tech-student-morgan-dana-harrington-disappears-concert/Story?id=8872201&page=2

Ground and air search called off for missing Virginia Tech student WSLS News Staff news@wsls.com Published: October 21, 2009 Updated: October 21, 2009 State Police and University of Virginia Police say they are stopping the ground search for missing Virginia Tech Student Morgan Harrington and investigating the state she was in before she disappeared this past Saturday. At a news conference in Charlottesville Wednesday afternoon, investigators said they believe that Harrington was on the grounds of the John Paul Jones Arena (JPJA) until at least 9:30 p.m. this past Saturday. Harrington was there with a group of friends, attending the Metallica concert. Police believe Harrington left her friends to go to the bathroom and somehow ended up outside JPJA. There was no re-entry allowed on the night of the concert. Investigators say Harrington got in contact with her friends, and told them she would either get in touch with them later or find another way home. Investigators said a passer-by found Harrington’s purse between the arena, and the UVA athletic fields in a small parking lot. Investigators said they not find signs of a struggle, but are treating the case as a criminal investigation. Police also said they checked surveillance video from JPJA and the surrounding area, but it has not helped their investigation. Investigators plan to release information about a reward as early as Thursday. It will be a minimum of $50,000. State Police also said they have created a new tip line. It is 434-352-3467. State Police say they have received more than 100 tips from across the country http://www2.wsls.com/sls/news/local/article/ground_search_called_off_for_missing_virginia_tech_student/56315/#

Metallica Fan Morgan Harrington Search Called Off Posted 5 hours ago by Chris Harris During a press conference Oct. 21, Virginia State Police and University of Virginia Police announced the unfortunate news that, after first calling off an aerial search, they've called off the ground search for missing Metallica fan Morgan Harrington, a 20-year-old Virginia Tech student who was last seen wearing a Pantera shirt, a black skirt and boots at Metallica's Oct. 17 concert in Charlottesville, Va. There have been several other developments in the case. Detectives have now confirmed that they're handling this case as a criminal investigation, and police also told reporters that they've checked surveillance video captured at the venue and the surrounding area, but that the tapes yielded no clues to add in their investigation. Police spokesperson Lieut. Joe Rader told reporters during the press conference that authorities are unsure whether Harrington is alive or whether "she has met some kind of ill fate." Police have been working off of more than 100 tips, which have come in from around the country. He called the lack of creditable leads and the fact they've had no contact from Harrington "disheartening." According to reports, investigators will announce details this afternoon about a reward in the case, which is said to be worth $50,000. From what police understand at this point, Harrington, who attended the Metallica show with a group of friends, left to use the bathroom, and somehow ended up outside the venue, which has a no re-entry policy. Investigators contacted friends inside, and told them she'd either get in touch with them later or find her own way home. On Tuesday, Metallica released a statement concerning Harrington's case. "We are deeply concerned about the disappearance of Morgan Dana Harrington," who is blonde and blue-eyed. "She was not carrying I.D. or a cell phone. Morgan was separated from her friends shortly before 9 P.M. at the venue, and police have been searching the area since Monday. We encourage anyone who has any information regarding Morgan's disappearance to please come forward. Our thoughts are with Morgan and her family for her safe return." Police ask that anyone with information concerning Harrington's disappearance call (434) 352-3467. http://www.noisecreep.com/2009/10/22/metallica-fan-morgan-harrington-search-called-off/#

Metallica joins hunt for missing Morgan Dana Harrington All About: Child Health and Safety Submitted by Jenny Decker RN on Oct 28th, 2009 It started as a normal day for the Harrington family. Morgan and her mother began the Saturday morning of October 17th much the same way they usually do, with making tea, drinking coffee, eating breakfast, and then chatting. However, Morgan also spent a good part of the day showing her mom what she was going to wear to the Metallica concert that night. The day would end in the worst nightmare any parent could dream of. Morgan went missing. The beloved band Metallica joins with her parents in the hunt for missing Morgan Dana Harrington. On Metallica’s website is the notice that one of their fans went missing. The band states, “We are deeply concerned about the disappearance of 20 year old Virginia Tech student Morgan Dana Harrington, who was last seen while attending our concert at the John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville, VA on Saturday night.” The band has offered between $50,000 to $100,000 in reward money for the safe return of the 20 year old Morgan. Apparently, the night Morgan went missing, she left the concert to use the restroom. She forgot her ticket stub and was not allowed back in. Her friends state that she called them telling them that she was not being readmitted and she would find a ride home, so not to worry about her. This was the last time that she was heard from. Monday morning police found her purse and cell phone. Her parents, Gil and Dan Harrington, report that she never went anywhere without her cell phone. The Federal Bureau of Investigation has joined the search for Harrington and ask that if anyone has any information to contact the Virginia State Police at (434) 352-3425 or the UVA Police at (434) 352-3467. Please visit the website for finding Morgan for pictures and information about Morgan. Metallica mentions on their website that their thoughts are with Morgan and her family with hopes for her safe return. Personal safety tips come into mind when thinking about the possible foul play involved with this case. According to the University of Oklahoma Police Department, it is important to have several methods of self-defense. The most important of which is to make lots of noise by screaming, using a whistle, or anything else you can think of, and getting as far away from the attacker as possible. If one technique does not work, try another, and then another to get away. The UOPD reminds everyone that the best strategy for self-defense is to “Escape and Evade”. Other safety tips include being aware of who is in your environment. Awareness can be the method that saves your life. Always checking the interior of your car before getting in and parking in well-lit areas go a long way towards prevention. Having keys ready before getting in your car can help slow the amount of time it takes for an attacker to approach you. Finally, locking your car whenever you leave it is important. Most importantly, do not accept a ride with someone you do not know. Morgan has blue eyes, blonde hair, is 5’6” and weighs 120 pounds. Search for missing VT student Morgan Harrington finds no new leads The volunteer effort to find a missing Virginia Tech student resumes this morning in Charlottesville. By Rex Bowman 777-3523 CHARLOTTESVILLE -- A massive search by 360 volunteers Friday apparently turned up no new leads in the disappearance of Virginia Tech student Morgan Harrington, but organizers said they will return to the job today and Sunday. Volunteers from across Virginia turned out to take part in the search across 2 square miles of Charlottesville. Working in teams of 10, they formed lines to walk through woods and up and down slopes. They peeped into culverts, peered under parked cars and poked through piles of leaves with sticks. They also looked into the windows of abandoned homes and climbed through the underbrush of some of Charlottesville's woollier neighborhoods. Each team spent between two and four hours scouring the area assigned to it, and some teams went out more than once. The Texas-based Laura Recovery Center, which organized the three-day search, anticipates as many as 1,000 people could repeat the effort today. Harrington, of Roanoke County, has been missing three weeks. The 20-year-old vanished from an Oct. 17 Metallica concert here, and though investigators and her family continue to speak publicly of their hopes of finding her alive -- the possible victim of an abduction -- search organizers let volunteers know early Friday that might not be the case. "If at any time during your search you smell an odor of decay, you need to try to determine if you can find the source of that odor," Dawn Davis of the recovery center said at the Virginia Department of Forestry headquarters building, which had been turned into a makeshift "Morgan Search Center." "If the worst has happened and you come across Morgan, you need to stop immediately -- notify your team leader," Davis said. But the daylong search turned up no trace of Harrington. Bob Smither, co-founder of the Laura Recovery Center, said 360 searchers in 39 teams combed about 2 square miles of the city. One team found tattered pieces of black fabric near the track where Harrington's purse was recovered, but he said it would be difficult to call it a significant find. "The state police warned us when we started this that we were going to find all kinds of clothes." Harrington was wearing an all-black outfit, including black tights, when she disappeared. Her purse and cellphone were found the following day in a grassy parking area on the southeast edge of the Lannigan Field track. The black fabric -- possibly torn pieces of clothing -- was found at the north end of the track. Chelsea Helm, a 21-year-old Tech student and friend of Harrington's, was among those who participated Friday. "You want to do whatever you can to get information and accomplish something instead of just sitting around," said Helm, of Roanoke County, explaining why she left Blacksburg at 6 a.m. to get to Charlottesville to help with the search. Volunteer searchers started streaming into the Department of Forestry headquarters shortly after 8 a.m. Among them were search-and-rescue teams from across the state. Organizers lectured the volunteers on how to mark items that might be evidence and told them to look in particular for a necklace Morgan was wearing that had three large chain links in front. State police investigators had not mentioned the necklace previously. Before she went missing Harrington had gone to the restroom but ended up outside the John Paul Jones Arena, unable to re-enter. In a cellphone conversation with her friends, she told them she might try to get a ride home with friends in Charlottesville. She was last seen about 9:30 that night walking on the Copeley Road bridge, just south of the arena. Harrington, who has blue eyes and blond hair, was last seen wearing a black miniskirt, a black T-shirt with the name of metal band Pantera across the front, black tights and black knee-high boots. Police searched the area around the bridge and arena several times without luck. But those who participated in Friday's hunt said they were hopeful the intense volunteer effort would help find Harrington. "When you get a large pool of people from the community, a large group of people, they can do so much more on the ground than the police can do," said volunteer Jon Guillot of Charlottesville. The Laura Recovery Center, founded in memory of Smither's daughter, who was 12 when she was abducted and slain, hopes to have a 3-square-mile area searched by the end of the effort late Sunday. Harrington's mother, Gil, spoke to volunteers who had gathered in a briefing room before they set out on Friday's search, thanking them for their help. "People are so good," she said. "I also recognize there is evil in the world. But, as is obvious in this room, there's more good, and good will prevail." http://www.roanoke.com/news/roanoke/wb/225432
