THE HAGUE, Netherlands -- It can be a jungle out there in the dating world. So why not have an ad that reads something like this: single male, red hair, really long arms who likes to hang in trees and groom himself seeks female for long-distance relationship.
Zookeepers in the Netherlands are planning to match Dutch and Indonesian orangutans over the Internet, believing that an online dating service could help determine whether lonely orangutans would be compatible mates.
A spokeswoman for an ape park said keepers are going to set up a connection so the animals can see each other and, by means of pressing a button, be able to give each other food.
She said the chance of two orangutans actually mating as a result of the online interaction is small because of the problem of transporting them between the Netherlands and Indonesia. But she said she wouldn't rule it out.
