A Safe Kids rally took place Saturday in Sarasota.
It has been three years since the disappearance and murder of Carlie Bruscia.
The Sarasota community remembered her Saturday at a Safe Kids rally. The annual event began the year after the 12-year-old's death and the event organizers plan on continuing it every year.
"It's kind of cool that everybody gets together,'' said Amanda Langworthy, who was Carlie's best friend. "And is able to you know teach all of these kids about the stuff they need to know so things like what happened to Carlie doesn't happen to somebody else."
The bittersweet event takes place on the grounds of the Sarasota church where Bruscia's body was found. A point not lost on children participating.
The event is held in honor of Carlie Bruscia, who was killed three years ago."I usually stay with my friends and stuff,'' said 12-year-old Brooke Bernier. "And I don't always go places with just my friends, I usually have my mom or my grandma come with me."
Programs to fingerprint and photo ID were offered along with games and prizes. All of the program's events are free to the public.
"The kid's ID cards that are issued ties into and is a link to the emergency identification that the state also provides,'' said Coleen Miller, a community outreach coordinator.
Langworthy said she hopes the program continues to grow.
"As long as they keep having it, I'll keep coming." she said.
