Profiles of a Rapist
Profiles of a Rapist Last Update: 11/7/2006 8:35:49 PM Posted By: Brandon Westerman When we hear stories of rape, these kinds of images probably come to mind. A stranger grabbing you in a dark empty parking lot, forcing you into a car. But in reality, most attacks happen at home, either yours or someone else's, and the attacker is often someone you know and may even trust. "I think people get fixated on what a sex offender looks like, they don't look scary they look like your brother or uncle, there's no one particular type." According to the FBI, there are 4 kinds of rapists. Believe it or not, one of them is a so-called “gentleman rapist”. 70 percent of rapes are committed by the guy you'd go out on a date with or a family member. He uses coercion as his weapon. The “power assertive” rapist is a control freak, who objectifies women and attacks suddenly. He may use a weapon. “Anger retaliatory” is a rapist who is educated and successful and attacks with violence. His victims are similar, hair color or body type, and he will probably kill his victim. The last group is the most dangerous - the “Ted Bundy”. He's a sadist and intends to kill his victim. He's smart and plans out his attack and looks for his victim to provide the opportunity. "I read interviews with rapists and they're cowards. They're looking for easy targets. All of that said, if a women screamed or looked like she would fight, they were out of there because it gets attention." Even serial killer Danny Rolling admitted he never chose a target who had a home alarm system or a dog. One of the toughest situations a women can face is to be raped by a family member. Not only do you have the physical assault, but many people don't report the attack out of fear. Fear of how their family might react. They choose instead to live in silence and in pain. “It's an extremely personal crime and there’s a lot of guilt and shame with its victims, so often they're scared to report because they're names will be released or they'll have to testify.” That's what the so-called “gentleman rapist” hopes for, a woman too terrified of the consequences to report the crime. http://www.cbs47.com/news/local/story.aspx?content_id=a78165ee-4b72-4382-935c-6f86f8042e74&rss=1
