Project AmberWatch Kicks Off In San Diego County Special Watches To Be Given To Nearly 800 Children POSTED: 4:59 pm PDT August 22, 2006 UPDATED: 6:14 pm PDT August 23, 2006 SAN DIEGO -- Sheriff Bill Kolender and District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis joined San Diego Chargers players and a "Prison Break" actor Tuesday to initiate a campaign aimed at protecting youngsters from predators. As part of the campaign, more than 800 special "AmberWatches" will be distributed to at-risk children across San Diego County. Children wearing the watches can draw attention to themselves at the touch of a button when threatened or scared. The watch's trademarked alert signal and bright flashing LED lights call immediate attention to a child threatened with abduction or abuse. Chargers players and actor Wade Williams from the television series "Prison Break" were at Tuesday’s event. Project AmberWatch's goal is to provide 50,000 AmberWatches to at-risk children across the country by the end of the year. Through its "Be Safe!" Education Program, the nonprofit AmberWatch Foundation seeks to educate 25 million elementary school age children and their parents by the end of 2008 on how to identify potentially dangerous situations to avoid abductors and predators. About 75 children were on hand to get the watches at the kickoff event. The AmberWatches can be purchased on Amazon.com, Toys R Us or on the project's Web site AmberWatch.com. http://www.10news.com/news/9720790/detail.html
