"Winnie's Place": New Domestic Violence Shelter, MNew Domestic Violence Shelter
By: Pam Cunningham
Violence during the holiday season is nothing new. Experts say the holidays are one of the worst times of the year for domestic violence. That's why Churches United is opening a domestic violence and homeless women's shelter in Moline.
Today volunteers who worked hard to make the shelter possible had the oportunity to walk through the renovated home. Each room was designed with a woman and her children in mind. The shelter manager, Kit Miller, says this time of year it's important women have a safe place away from their abuser.
"Holidays are emotional and so when you combine that with somebody who's abusive it can be a very explosive holiday," Miller says.
The shelter's name is Winnie's Place. It is still looking for common household items for the new families and even some Christmas gifts.
