Search continues for Fenton woman By Sharon Stone Published: Wednesday, February 18, 2009 9:29 AM EST Fenton — More than 100 volunteers joined in on a search for Randa Jawhari, a Fenton woman who has been missing since last Tuesday night. Fadia Jawhari, Randa’s sister said the family organized a search of the area and were overwhelmed with the turnout. The K-9 One Search and Rescue, a volunteer group out of Genesee and Lapeer counties, assisted. Randa’s scent was picked up from her apartment to McDonald’s. The Jawharis are not going to stop searching for Randa. Fadia said the community has been amazing. “We had more than 100 volunteers, even strangers. “It was touching, warm and unbelievable.” Fadia said, though the family is experiencing such a tragedy, they are humbled by the support. “It’s just amazing. “We’re not going to stop until we find her.” Fadia was the last family member with whom Randa spoke, which was at approximately 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 10. Their mother called Randa’s Shiawassee Avenue apartment at 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 11, however, Randa did not answer the phone. After dropping her granddaughter off at school, Randa’s mother, who cares for her granddaughter, stopped by Randa’s apartment to check on her. The apartment was empty. Fadia said this is out of the ordinary for Randa, who typically telephones family members multiple times on a daily basis. Fadia said Randa is weak. She said she has been diagnosed as bipolar and has other medical conditions. Detectives with the Fenton Police Department are investigating this missing person case. Det. Ron Skarzynzki said Monday morning that there is nothing new to report. The detective said Fenton police were in contact with Randa last week. He said police responded to a call last Tuesday, at approximately 10 a.m. referencing a woman, later identified as Randa, wandering and asking for money at the McDonald’s restaurant on Owen Road. Skarzynski said a Fenton police officer responded to the call and drove Randa back to her apartment. Because of her health, Skarzynski said Randa has spent a lot of time in Flint participating in programs and has many contacts up there. He said fliers with her photo and information have been distributed to all of the facilities in Flint where she might go to, as well as the Flint Police Department and Genesee County Sheriff’s Department. If Randa has checked herself into a facility or program, Skarzynski said, because of privacy laws, employees are not permitted to reveal to anyone if they are there, including police or family. He said this has hampered with the investigation. “If she’s checked herself in, they won’t call. She has to call,” said Skarzynski. Skarzynski said it is unknown if Randa has been taking her medications. He said she prefers natural treatments and has balked at taking her medications in the past. “We’ve searched by land and air. We’ve got fliers all over. “You know, we’re hoping for a call,” Skarzynski said. Skarzynski, who has been working on this case from the beginning said, "We’re going to find her.” http://www.tctimes.com/articles/2009/02/18/news/doc499c1a8d460d1915304814.txt

Family offers reward for missing Fenton woman Wednesday, February 18, 2009 | 6:04 PM Randa Jawhari has been missing since last Tuesday By Lori Dougovito FENTON (WJRT) -- (02/18/09) -- It's been a long, difficult week for a Fenton family still searching for 42-year-old Randa Jawhari. Police say they have nothing to go on at this point. There's been no sign of Jawhari anywhere. Her family is now offering a cash reward for her safe return. Police plan to forward a flier with her photo, hoping her story makes the news nationwide. The Jawhari family is close. Phone calls are frequent. Randa's sister was the last to speak with her last Tuesday night around 11 p.m. Every time a telephones rings now, her family hopes it's her on the line. Volunteers have posted fliers. Diana Anderson is Randa's youngest sister. "The community has just been so amazing." There have been searches both on the ground and in the air, but still no sign of Randa Jawhari. Anderson is frustrated and feeling helpless. "She's sick. She needed to be watched." Anderson says her family did watch and checked in on Jawhari every single day. For the past six months, Jawhari had been living in the apartment where she was last seen in a blue bathrobe last Tuesday. According to Anderson, she couldn't really completely care for herself and she's bi-polar. "They just started giving her her shots again," Anderson said. In the week she's been missing, Anderson says she's heard rumors that her sister had been found, but says the rumors are untrue. Police say they have little to go on and a $1,000 reward has been posted for information leading the Jawhari's safe return. "We just want her home. It's as simple as that," Anderson said. If you have any information about where this woman is - please call Fenton Police Department at 810-629-5311. http://abclocal.go.com/wjrt/story?section=news/local&id=6665490

Family waging 'desperate search' for missing woman by Sally York | The Flint Journal Sunday March 01, 2009, 1:10 AM FENTON, Michigan -- Anisse Jawhari has been trying to wait patiently, but on Tuesday she broke down and called the Fenton Police Department. "It's been two weeks," she told an officer, weeping. "I want my daughter back." Randa Jawhari, 42, went missing Feb. 11. The 5-foot-tall, 100-pound woman was last seen wearing a blue bathrobe. As police investigate, volunteers conduct searches and fliers offering a $1,000 reward are plastered all over town, the family's misery is palpable. "We're broken. We're broken," said Diana Anderson, 37, of Argentine Township, Randa Jawhari's sister. "Our faith in God is the only thing that keeps us standing." Normal life is impossible for the large, close Jawhari family. Anisse Jawhari constantly kisses a photograph of her daughter and prays for her safe return. • Name: Randa Jawhari • Age: 42 • Description: 5 feet tall; 100 pounds. • Missing: Since Feb. 11 from her apartment in Fenton. • Reward: $1,000 for information leading to her safe recovery. • Information: Call the Fenton Police Department, (810) 629-5311. Callers may remain anonymous. Randa Jawhari's daughter, Mattilynn, 6, who stays with her grandparents, left voice mail messages on the phone in her mother's apartment every day until recently, when the phone was disconnected. The missing woman's five sisters and brother (a sixth sister lives in Ohio) find themselves looking for her wherever they go, even checking ditches along the road. "I look in every car stopped at a light, in every store," said Anderson, spokeswoman for her family. "I don't sleep. I'm not eating well. "I always have this big lump in my throat -- it's hard." Did Randa Jawhari leave on her own, or was there foul play? Police say they don't know but believe Jawhari -- who has bipolar disorder -- could be staying with friends she made in Flint through Rainbow Connection, which provides services to mentally ill people. Jawhari had refused for three months to be driven to a clinic for the medication she was supposed to take every 15 days for the disorder, police said. But family members say they doubt Jawhari is in Flint. For one, she is believed to have no money. The day before she disappeared, she was panhandling at a local McDonald's. Police picked her up and drove her back to her apartment, on Shiawassee Avenue near U.S. 23. For another, none of Jawhari's clothes appears to be missing with the exception of the bathrobe she wore on the night before family members discovered she was gone. Also, a nearly full pack of cigarettes was found next to Jawhari's favorite chair. Anderson said her sister was a chain smoker who never would have left her cigarettes behind, much less her daughter, on whom she doted. And there's this: Jawhari customarily called her parents and siblings several times every day. A recent phone bill covering less than a month lists 55 calls. They all stopped after 11:15 p.m. Feb. 10, when she last spoke to her sister, Fadia Jawhari. It was a normal conversation, Fadia Jawhari said. Her sister said she was tired and going to bed. But by morning, she was nowhere to be found. Finally, although Randa Jawhari had made friends at Rainbow Connection and taught an acting class there, she had not been to the facility for six weeks, Anderson said. "I don't know what happened, but I do know she loves Mattilynn and would never leave her family," Anderson said. "We are asking people to look in their sheds or any abandoned buildings on their property. "Just please continue to search for her. We are not giving up, and we don't want anyone else to give up, either." Certainly, no one seems to have given up yet. The Jawharis said they are grateful for the tremendous support they have received from the police and the community. Groups of volunteers have twice searched the area near Randa Jawhari's apartment. The second time, 100 volunteers came, some of them strangers. People have inundated the family with food, prayers and offers of help, Anderson said. Jackie Weeks of Fenton, whose daughter is friends with Mattilynn, has transformed her Facebook page into a sort of online central command for the missing woman. The page shows photos of Randa Jawhari, a summary of what happened and links to news stories. Regular updates are sent to more than 400 people, Weeks said. "I see the family every day, and it just absolutely breaks my heart," she said. "I had to do something." In their worried state, Anisse Jawhari and her husband, David, find it difficult to operate their eatery, Beirut Restaurant and Grocery in the Flint Farmers' Market, but hope they will be reunited with their daughter soon. "We believe she's alive," Anisse Jawhari said. "We love her and miss her and want her to come home." http://www.mlive.com/news/flint/index.ssf/2009/03/family_waging_desperate_search.html

Reward Increased to $6000 for Jawhari's Return March 11, 2009 Sharon Stone Tri-County Times In addition to the $1,000 reward offered by the family of Randa Jawhari, for information leading to her safe return, another $5,000 reward is now being offered. The $5,000 reward is being offered by the Carole Sund/Carrington Foundation. The Carole Sund/Carrington Foundation is offering the reward for information leading to the return of the missing Fenton woman. The family of Jawhari reported her missing on Wednesday, Feb. 11, from her Fenton apartment. If the police investigation determines that a homicide has occurred, the foundation will then post the reward for any information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible. The Carole Sund/Carrington Foundation knows the reward money can make a difference, because its reward money has already assisted in the location of nine missing persons, the apprehension of 37 murder suspects, three kidnappers of young children, and one suspect charged with attempted murder of a peace officer. The foundation currently has 37 suspects in custody in 10 states. To date, the foundation has paid a total of $272,600 in rewards to citizens who did the right thing by coming forward and sharing information they had regarding these cases. According to Scott Webb, executive director of the foundation, everyone has the responsibility to do their part to help make their community a safe place. Det. Ron Skarzynski of the Fenton Police Department said the Jawhari family made contact with the foundation and provided them with Skarzynskis phone number. He said after reviewing all the criteria, the foundation was willing to put in $5,000. In these economic times, Skarzynski said that he believes the increased reward could help in their investigation. As of Wednesday afternoon, there was no update in the investigation. Skarzynski said he continues to receive tips, however, nothing has panned out. Jawharis case has been listed on all of the missing persons Web sites, and Skarzynski is now attempting to get Crime Stoppers to highlight this case for expanded coverage. The Carole Sund/Carrington Foundation Carole and Juli Sund and Silvina Pelosso were three missing sightseers, later found murdered near Yosemite National Park in February 1999. While they were missing, Carole Sunds parents (Julis grandparents), Francis and Carole Carrington, at the request of the FBI, posted rewards both for their safe return and for information leading to the whereabouts of their rental car. The Carringtons believe the posting of these rewards, and the media attention they received, contributed to the car being located and the first break in their case. They were thankful they had the financial means to offer these rewards, and it is because of this that they have started the Carole Sund/Carrington Foundation. This foundation was established to assist in cases such as the case of Randa Jawhari, which is a similar circumstance as the Carringtons in that Jawhari is a missing person. http://www.tctimes.com/articles/2009/03/11/news/doc49b82f6a46c12798680522.txt

Family of missing Fenton woman holds prayer vigil Saturday, June 06, 2009 | 11:32 PM By Joel Feick FENTON (WJRT) -- (06/06/09)--Candles were lit in Fenton on Saturday night to remember a missing woman on the week of her birthday. Her family is still asking tonight, "Where's Randa?" Randa Jawhari has been missing since February. She was last seen at her Fenton apartment. Her family members and some friends gathered to celebrate her birthday and remind everyone that they are still praying for her safe return. Members of the Jawhari family wait for the mail and for phone calls. But after four months, there is no sign of 43-year-old Randa Jawhari. Her birthday was Tuesday. Her family -- five sisters, a brother, her mom and her dad -- haven't given up hope that Ronda can somehow be found alive. : an actress, author, and artist who was also bi-polar Perhaps the worst part for the Jawhari family is the lack of closure. Randa -- an actress, author, and artist who was also bi-polar -- went missing without a trace. After extensive media coverage, billboards on local expressways and a $6,000 reward, family members say there have been no solid leads. They are praying and thankful to the Fenton Police, and volunteers who have stepped forward to help them through their personal misery. "I knew that the darkest moment of my life had just begun," said sister Naheda Jawhari. The family doesn't want vengeance or revenge. They just want Randa. If you have any information, contact Fenton Police. http://abclocal.go.com/wjrt/story?section=resources/home_improvement&id=6852279
