Salt Lake County's Rape Recovery Center / Utah
Rape Recovery Center Aids Victims of Sexual Violence May 5th, 2006 @ 3:33pm Carole Mikita Reporting For 31 years, Salt Lake County's Rape Recovery Center has helped tens of thousands of people who have suffered sexual assaults. The center holds its annual benefit tonight. This is the only non-profit center of its kind in the state, providing intervention and counseling to victims of sexual violence. Incidents of sexual assault in Utah have been climbing over the last ten years. Whether that signifies more attacks or better reporting, no one is sure, but more people are asking for help. The RCC has four licensed therapists to offer their expertise free. The center also has a crisis hotline available 24/7, 365 days a year; and staff members will also go to the hospital to offer victims support. Heather Stringfellow, Exec. Dir Rape Recovery Center: "We're a resource to be there and advocate and support someone, should they choose to report the crime to law enforcement. But our services are not dependant on that; people have the choice whether to report or not and we support them in that decision." Therapists treat mostly women, but also men and children as young as 14, and their family members who are also traumatized by these assaults. The programs assisted more than 13-hundred people last year. And the hotline has translators who can speak 150 different languages. The Rape Crisis Hotline number is 801-467-7273. The Rape Recovery Center annual benefit is at Westminster College tonight at 6:00. http://www.ksl.com/index.php?nid=148&sid=247446
