Sandy Police Focus on Domestic Violence October 14th, 2006 @ 9:37pm (KSL News) Sandy City is working to bring attention to one of the fastest growing crimes in Utah-- domestic violence. As part of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the Sandy police department tied 650 ribbons to trees today. This represents the number of domestic violence cases in Sandy alone. On average, there are about 6-thousand clients in Utah domestic violence shelters each year. More than half of them are children. The National Coalition Against Domestic Assault estimates one in four women will be a victim in her lifetime. Barbara Higgins/ Sandy Police Dept.: "Domestic violence has a stigma attached to it. We're trying to let people know there are resources available out there. So as long as we can get the education and the awareness out there, I think the stigma will start to go away."
