SAN FRANCISCO -- The father of American-born Taliban soldier John Walker Lindh is asking President George W. Bush for a grant of clemency.
Frank Lindh said his son is really a "decent and honorable" man who was maligned as a traitor and murderer. He choked back tears while telling the nonprofit Commonwealth Club that his son was on a misunderstood spiritual quest and had nothing to do with Sept. 11, 2001.
John Walker Lindh was 20 years old when he was captured by American forces alongside Taliban fighters in Afghanistan. He was charged with supporting terrorists and conspiring to kill Americans, but reached a plea deal with prosecutors.
Lindh, who is now 25, pleaded guilty to lesser charges of supplying services to the Taliban. In exchange, he agreed to withdraw claims of abuse or torture by his U.S. military guards.
