Something I'd like to share
I went to pick up my youngest children from school this afternoon. The Director told me something a little scary. At the local video store, a man was making inappropriate suggestions to a girl that worked there. It made her uncomfortable enough to call the police. Turns out the guy was a sexually violent predator from Oregon who never registered in PA. because he had already violated his probation by leaving Oregon. They arrested him immediately. Kudo's to the girls' parents or caretakers. She knew exactly what to do. But as my husband said when I told him about this.........keep an extra watchful eye on your kids this holiday season. Adults tend to be more distracted than usual right now with the hustle & bustle of the holiday season, making our children prime targets for predators of all sorts. Give your kids an extra gift this year, keep them safe & sound...Gaia

Educating kids on this subject is soooooooooo important, and luckily this girl knew exactly what to do. It's hard not to scare them at the same time too sometimes. My 9 yr. old niece (brother's daughter) is a beautiful little blonde girl and he is terrified of what could happen to her. She has recently discovered the internet and messenger and chat rooms. At Thanksgiving she announced that she met a "girl" named Bridget, 10 yrs old, on the internet. Erika (my niece) was asked by "Bridget" for her phone number, address and real full name!!! And Erika gave it to this "Bridget" person! We had a LONG talk with her and I think she understands now, that Bridget could be anybody. My brother monitors her internet use, but she stays with her mother every other week (they are divorced). And over there she is not closely monitored on the internet. The internet is awesome, but its a haven for predators. Please let your kids know!!!!!!!

They finally posted the story. I was told it was a girl he approached, the article says male, but either way, he's behind bars. And thats what counts!! Man held for court in sex offender case By GEORGE OSGOOD Star-Gazette Wellsboro Bureau gosgood@stargazette.com December 3, 2005 WELLSBORO - An Oregon man charged with failing to register as a sex offender waived a preliminary hearing Friday, sending his case to Tioga County Common Pleas Court. Mark R. Blanchard, 50, who had been living in an apartment on Crafton Street, waived the hearing before Wellsboro District Justice Philip Sweet. He ordered Blanchard to appear in county court Dec. 12 for formal arraignment. Wellsboro Officer James Bodine arrested Blanchard last month on a misdemeanor count of failure to comply with registration of sexual offenders. He had been in Wellsboro for seven or eight months, Bodine said. "He moved here to escape parole in Oregon," Bodine said. "He's classified as a sexual predator, not just a sexual offender. He is a top-level abuser. He has a lifetime responsibility to register with police no matter where he goes. He failed to do that." Police seized a computer from Blanchard's apartment and will analyze its contents. They are also investigating Blanchard's activities while he was in Wellsboro. "We don't know whether he abused anyone here," Bodine said. "We are looking into that." Bodine arrested Blanchard after a worker at Hollywood Video on Crafton Street complained that he made "inappropriate" remarks to juvenile male employees. Blanchard will likely be returned to Oregon on a cross-country inmate bus, Bodine said. Star Gazette

I'm glad he is behind bars where he belongs. Chat rooms and messangers can be scary and good thing for parental controls but even with chat rooms, adults can find them and come in. Its very important for children to do the following also. Never give their full name, address, phone number, city where they live, parents or siblings name, what school they go to, what sport or interest they have, team numbers, where they work etc. Just with a few little comments like I go to this school and I play this sport is enough information for someone to find them and follow them.
