Lawmaker accused of domestic abuse
BRIEFING: BIG LAKE, MINN.
State Rep. Mark Olson has been arrested on suspicion of misdemeanor domestic abuse involving his wife, a Sherburne County sheriff's official said Monday.
Sheriff's deputies were called to the couple's home in Big Lake about 5 p.m. Sunday, and Blaine police arrested Olson several hours later at the private Calvin Christian School in Blaine, authorities said.
Olson was booked into the Sherburne County jail Sunday and remained there Monday, said Chief Deputy Scott Gudmundson. As of Monday afternoon, Olson was awaiting an appearance before a judge; his bail was not yet set.
He faces a charge of fifth-degree domestic assault, Gudmundson said, declining to give further details of the alleged incident.
The 51-year-old Republican was elected in 1992 and was re-elected last week to his eighth term representing District 16B. His legislative assistant Dave Easterday said he was "not familiar" with the news of Olson's arrest and couldn't recall the last time he'd talked to him.
Olson works as a carpenter and log home builder, according to his campaign Web site.
He and his wife, Heidi, have five children.
Calls to Olson's home were not immediately returned.
