Stephen Sherman--2nd degree Sexual Assault--Plea Deal
Wrightstown teacher faces more sex charges in second complaint Oct 7, 1:20 AM EDT GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) -- A Kaukauna man accused of repeatedly having sex with a 14-year-old girl faced new charges Thursday after a second complainant came forward saying she also had sex with him as a minor. Stephen Sherman, 28, a teacher at Wrightstown Middle School, was charged with sexual assault of a student by a school staff person and sexual intercourse with a child in a new complaint filed Thursday in Brown County Circuit Court. According to the new complaint, the woman, who turns 21 this month, said she was a 16-year-old student at Wrightstown High School when she met Sherman in January 2001 and he made sexual advances toward her. The two had sex in May 2001 at Sherman's mother's house in Wrightstown, the complaint said. Sherman "told me all the time that he could get into trouble for seeing me," the woman told authorities. "We hid our relationship." The relationship continued off and on until January 2004, the complaint said. The woman came forward after Sherman's arrest for allegedly having sex as many as 30 times with a 14-year-old girl since January, for which he was charged with repeated second degree sexual assault last week. He faces 51 years in prison if convicted on all the charges. Outagamie County District Attorney Carrie Schneider said she is also considering filing charges as early as next week, because several assaults with the younger girl allegedly occurred at his Kaukauna apartment - including two instances where he allegedly videotaped the encounters. Sherman had remained a teacher until being placed on administrative leave by the school district this week. Brown County Court Commissioner Lawrence Gazeley ordered that Sherman remain jailed in lieu of $20,000, rejecting a prosecutor's request to double the bond in light of the additional charges. Gazeley scheduled a preliminary hearing for Oct. 26 and ordered that Sherman have no contact with either alleged victim. --- AP News

Teacher to Face Trial for Alleged Relationships with Teens Oct 26, 2005, 07:24 PM EDT The Wrightstown teacher accused of having sex with a minor was in court Wednesday and bound over to stand trial. Earlier this month, a 14-year-old Wrightstown girl came forward and admitted having a sexual relationship with Stephen Sherman. Sherman's teen-age accuser and a woman testified about having sexual relationships with the teacher. The 14-year-old detailed several incidents this past summer, which she says were among dozens of sexual encounters with Sherman. "During the whole relationship? Probably 50," she said. The teen said she and Sherman talked about their relationship and the consequences if they were caught. "He said if I didn't -- I told anyone, he would kill himself," she testified, "and he could get in a whole lot of trouble for it." In addition to the girl, a woman who is now 21 testified that she had a sexual relationship with Sherman for several months when she was 16 years old. She said, "The only reason I came forward was for mainly because I know what happened to her." After the two witnesses, Sherman's attorney, Jeff Jazgar, conceded there was probable cause to go to trial. The defense didn't present any witnesses at the hearing. Sherman will be back in court November 8th for his arraignment. WBAY TV

Teacher Waives Hearing on Sex Assault Charges Jan 19, 2006, 07:22 PM EST By Jason Zimmerman A Wrightstown teacher accused of having sex with underage girls appeared in a different courtroom Wednesday. Steven Sherman waived his right in Outagamie County court to a preliminary hearing Wednesday afternoon, to hear the evidence against him. Tuesday, Sherman's defense attorney met with prosecutors to view a videotape that was found in a Dumpster behind Sherman's residence in Kaukauna. Prosecutors won't comment about what is on that videotape. Prosecutors allege Sherman met with a 14-year-old girl he first met when he was her sixth-grade teacher, and started a relationship in January 2005 that lasted until the girl and her parents went to police in October 2005. After that girl came forward, a 21-year-old woman came forward and said she had a sexual relationship with Sherman when she was 16 and a student at Wrightstown High School. Sherman is charged with numerous counts of sexual assault in both Outagamie and Brown counties, because authorities believe he had sexual encounters in both counties. Sherman lives in Outagamie County. The Outagamie County district attorney told Action 2 News negotiations are underway to combine all the charges from both counties for one trial. The charges carry up to 150 years in prison. Sherman's next scheduled court appearance in Outagamie County is next month. http://www.wbay.com/Global/story.asp?s=4379893

Posted February 25, 2006 Teacher seeks new judge to oversee assault cases The Post-Crescent APPLETON — A scheduled arraignment Friday for a former Wrightstown teacher charged with sexual assault did not take place because the defendant wants a new judge. Stephen C. Sherman, 29, Kaukauna, is charged with second-degree sexual assault and sexual assault of a student by a school staff member in Outagamie County. Sherman has seven sexual assault charges pending in Brown County involving other alleged sexual acts involving the same two victims. He has entered not guilty pleas to those charges. Sherman was to appear for an arraignment Friday in front of Outagamie County Circuit Judge Mark McGinnis. However, Sherman's attorney Friday filed a request for a judicial substitution, effectively putting off the arraignment until a new judge is assigned. The charges in both counties stem from relationships Sherman allegedly had with two females, ages 14 and 16. Sherman was a substitute teacher and full-time teacher in the Wrightstown School District from 2001 to 2005. http://www.wausaudailyherald.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060225/APC0101/602250597&SearchID=73236958308439
