Convicted sex offender set for release By Jeff Starck • Wausau Daily Herald • January 30, 2009 A man who was convicted on sexual assault charges nearly 24 years ago will be released from prison next week to return to Wausau. Terrance W. Steppert, 44, will be released on parole Wednesday and will live in transitional housing near the Marathon County Courthouse, according to the Wisconsin Department of Corrections. He will live there until he finds a job and a permanent residence. Steppert will be on intensive supervision by Corrections sex offender agents and is subject to constant electronic monitoring. Steppert was convicted June 18, 1985, of three counts of first-degree sexual assault of an adult female. The public was notified of his release because his victim was not a family member and he previously violated the terms of his parole, said Mike Williams, field supervisor for the Marathon County parole and probation office. All sex offenders are reviewed prior to their release from prison by a group of law enforcement officials and corrections agents to assess their risk to the public and the possibility of re-offending, Williams said. Steppert first was paroled on April 26, 2005, after serving two-thirds of his sentence as allowed by previous state law. He was returned to prison Feb. 10, 2006, after he violated the terms of his parole. Steppert will be under supervision until Sept. 15, 2015, and is required to register as a sex offender for life.
