T-Shirt Memorial Strikes Chord 100 displaying love ones lost
T-Shirt Memorial Strikes Chord/Ca Summer Strut, Staff Writer Students who walked into the Quad on Tuesday were overwhelmed to see over 100 t-shirts hanging on clotheslines displaying messages from around the country from women who were survivors of abuse or loving friends of those who had died from it. The fair was in commemoration of Domestic Violence Awareness Day. Every year PCC hosts the fair in accordance to The Clothesline Project to promote awareness for women's domestic abuse. For five years now, that organization has also played a role in educating the students of PCC about the battery, rape, and abuse of women nationwide. The number of attendants increased as the day went on, with a constant flow of people making their own shirts for themselves and the ones they loved. Some of the shirts had harsh words of anger, but despite the profanity, they were proudly displayed to show the intense internal struggle of the victims. Other shirts, primarily those dedicated to women who lost their lives through abuse, had more solemn messages, encouraging people to speak up and end the violence. There were also eight silhouettes with cards on them, each with a different story of a woman who had lost her life to abuse. Each color shirt represented a different form of abuse: white represented women who died due to violence; beige and yellow represent battered or assaulted women; red, pink and orange are for survivors of rape and sexual assault. Blue and green are for survivors of incest and sexual abuse; purple and lavender represent women attacked because of their sexual orientation; black represented women attacked for political reasons. Since 1990, The Clothesline Project, that began in Cape Cod, Mass., has been educating the public about violence against women. http://www.pcc-courieronline.com/101206/news/tshirt.html
